I decided on getting the 13" Ultimate coil instead...

Didn't feel like waiting 2-3 weeks for another shipment of the 12X10 SEFs to come in so I sprung for the 13" Ultimate (same price). Anybody currently using one of these? How do you like it? I saw were Critterhunter was doing comparisons and field tests with all these Sov coils over the last couple of months while reading and researching but I haven't seen a post by him in quite a while. I don't mind that it's white as it would probably fair better in the Summer heat I would imagine. Besides my 11" Penetrator is white and so is the CoinSearch! LOL. If I really like the Ultimate I guess I will be trading or selling my Penetrator since they will be close in size. It actually impressed me yesterday. I took it down the the town's little fresh water beach and dug some pretty tiny items with it that sounded of like larger targets. Actually worked better than expected but I wish the ears on the coil where mounted more center than on end so it would be a little better balanced. PS: my search for a nice custom rod is NOT going well! I guess those V clips are scarcer than hen's teeth!

If i remember right Critters final review of the 13" coil was he did not like it and gave it back to the person he borrowed it from might have been something about his bad soil ? i never finished reading all of it lol , just remember the coil is water resistant not water proof , from most review,s i have read most were not to good if compared to the 12x10 coil by most people , i had one when they first came out and did not like it i sold it . Those v-clips are hard to find now since the GT is done even SR does not have anymore . Sometimes a few show up on the auction sites . GL Jim

I use the 13 ultimate at the beach. On my beaches it works quite well. I do have to readjust the sensitivity when I go from wet sand to dry sand. I get good depth with the Ultimate as I have dug dimes at a measured 12 inches in damp sand. It does not work as well on parks and playgrounds where there is an over abundance of trash due to the amount of ground that It covers. I think the last time I heard from Critterhunter he was planning on adding the 13" Ultimate to his arsenal. Due to the width of the center piece it took me a while to become proficient at pin pointing. But with a little practice I do quite well with it. Some like the coil and some do not. I guess that is why there are so many different ones made.

It probably won't get nearly as much use as my CoinSearch coil anyway but for the wide open spaces, I guess I can think of it as a slightly smaller, lighter WOT coil. I finally got a hold of Plugger and ordered me a custom straight shaft that should be here in a week. I'm pretty excited. Thinking about installing a remote all metal pinpoint switch in it as well. I had one for a while and found it to be just OK. Not as good as the 12 x 10 SEF in RFI situations. I found it to be too sensitive in salt water and wet sand. My Excalibur II went wacky when I had it on and could never get it to stabilize from one area to another in the same place I was hunting. Plus if I got it near any power lines, forget it. I did like it in parks that I have hit in the past with the WOT and the factory 10 inch coil as long as no power lines or cell phone towers were around.

The 12 x 10 SEF on the other hand has been rock solid stable and pretty deep. I prefer it over the factory coil and it is deeper than that. I even prefer it over the WOT which I ran for about three years. The WOT was big, it was deep but it was not nearly as accurate with the sounds as the 12 x 10.

That is just my preference and you may well be very happy with the 13 Ultimate. It was just that in the areas that I hunt, the 13 was just too sensitive!

BTW, whatever happened to Critter? Haven't seen him here in a while. He was the moderator on this particular forum I think?

I did notice the 13" is about an ounce lighter than the standard coil and the SEF is in between the two. The SEF is and excellent coil, but someone make a good point.... just because its good on one machine its made for doesnt always mean its great on every machine in every area. Im going to give the 13 a beach test run the next time i cant water hunt. I already tested it on some small rings, it did well against the standard coil in air testing. I did some teflon taping to ensure i have it water tight just in case. I just want to see the performance on the wet sand based on the Xcal performance.
