I.D. varies between Salt and Normal Modes

Hello All,

I'm mostly a beach hunter but decided to do a little land hunting with my CZ6A for a change of pace. The beaches have been pretty dead around here lately. I was testing some gold items to bring my brain up to speed with the various I.D.'s. I did confirm that normal mode will hit small gold items better than salt mode. What surprised me was on one ring would I.D. solidly on "foil" in salt mode and then I.D. solidly on "nickel" in normal mode. I would certainly dig either one of those I.D.'s so it not really a big deal. I just thought I would bring that up as that was a little surprising to me.

Have a great New Year,

The 6a will ID, meter wise, differently on some gold targets. Good thing is, it's all mid tones anyway, and ya dig those babies when beach hunting.

Land hunting is a little different since you may want to eliminate one of the Tab meter Id's if you run into a lot of them, or the Foil ID's, but a lot of rings falls into those categories.

The surprising thing about this test was that the exact same ring ID ed differently when I changed from Salt mode to Normal mode. Only one of the items I tested did that. The rest of the items ID ed the same in both modes.

Today it rained all day and I was house bound. The rain though sure makes digging the sod easier for awhile, so I can't complain too much.

Perhaps because the ground balance points are different, the target id moved???

I have no idea what happens when the CZ gets switched from Normal to Salt, and it may effect either the ground balance points or the discrimination circuit, but I do know it can ID certain gold targets on the meter differently...especially smaller gold. Some even go to the low tone/mid tone bounce.

Depth on smaller gold is also effected as well. More so when in discriminate mode. I see less of a difference when in all metal. But that may be my ears playing tricks on me.

One fellow that frequented the forum a while back used both modes on a conventional CZ not a 3D to check various items and while I have not done this one might experiment to dig or not to dig kind of thing..and we all have our little tricks especially with those darn elusive gold rings...

Have seen Dave J. post some on the Teknetics and Fisher Classic forums. Wonder if he is reading here and could add some insight on what factors affect the difference in ID between salt and normal modes on the CZ and if it may be a slight tuning difference or just inherent in the design?

I wonder if the salt mode has a wider mid tone range than the normal? I noticed that with my 21 over other land detectors.

Some interesting thoughts on this thread which may be correct..I do know when in salt mode.. its definetly a weaker mode to accomodate the saltwater envitoment..Certainly questions a Fisher tech. could answer or at least give his opinion...

Salt mode has more built in Disc. Targets on the fringe of one mode could slide into the next lowest
ID segment. Salt mode does give up some depth. If you test some small 10K in dry sand in normal mode
then switch to salt mode it can disappear.
Until i talked to Mr Bill i did not realize salt is a conductor so more Disc is needed to cancel it out.

In our beaches here on the Texas Gulf coast, I never used the salt mode. I would GB in the normal mode and the machine would go deeper than the salt mode and like you said, it would hit small gold alot better. The CZ6a is an excellent unit and regret selling mine years ago. I'm now thinking about getting the AT Pro as a back up for my Excal but if you should decide to sell that CZ6a, please give me first crack at it. Thanks and good hunting. John
