I. D. item found today

I found this today around an old homesite and need help identifying it.
It is 3"x3" in size and is made out of bronze.
I thought it is the top of a flag staff, but don't see how it fastened to anything.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Felix

Looks like an ornate eagle that would be perched atop a flag. Is that a piece of wood that is sticking out of the bottom? I would say that would further add to this having been on some sort of flag pole. Very cool! Looks like an old one too.

Thanks for the reply!
I don't think that is wood at the bottom, but it does look like it may have been a stem or theaded piece coming out from the ball section.
I'm surprised that I did'nt get a lot of replies about this which made it more interesting as there are lots of items that have been identified on this forum.
Thanks again,
Felix
