I'm just too hooked on tones.

Me and the Golden (and some other tone id machines) will just have to get along without it.

I guess thats my trouble with the Cortes, too. I love the way the Cortes looks and it performs pretty well but the single tone wears me out.

Going to learn to quit messing with the single tone units.

Mike, I have the Royal Sabre and just love tones-I can actually set the Royal to a three-tone ID. I'm really eyeing the Golden. I heard that you can adjust the tones in normal discriminate with the help of the notch control (turning until the tones readjust) to where foil will be a mixed low tone/iron, nickel the second full tone, tabs the third full tone,, zincs a mixed third tone/high, and coins a high tone. Have you tried that? How does it compare to the other ID machines you have? And does it give tones in the a/m mode? Thanks

Hey slingshot,

I don't have any experience the Royal Sabre but I have used a couple of Golden Sabre II. I too, like their tones, especially the ability to set the break points where I want them. The GSII also has special sound for solid foil range conductors that is unique.

The notch control on the Golden uMax will give some tone adjustment but it is much more effective as a notch adjustment than a tone control. With factory settings I had to learn to use the notch switch to help id the two middle tones. Mine no longer has the factory settings and I have it set for clear tones for nickle, zinc, and high coin. But in doing so I have lost a lot of notch width adjustment range.

I'm not familiar with any of the tone id models from Tesoro. I started out with a Whites 4900 D in 1988, and found alot of good stuff with it, so I guess I sort of broke in with only one tone. When I graduated to the Eagle II SL 90, the tone id feature was a welcome change. Now, I use a Sov XS with the tone id and after market Sun Ray meter. However, I like the Toltec II, even though it is a single tone unit, but it has the analog meter for additional information. I like the Lobo for some environments because it gets better depth than the Totelc, but I also dig alot more junk because there is no meter.

What kind of depths do the Royal Sabre and Golden Sabre models produce? The reason I like the Toltec is because it does so well in ghost town trash, and with the 4" coil, cherry picking is productive between nails and other trash. Are the Sabre's as good at defeating masking?

I've never used a Toltec. From just what I've picked up by listening and reading I believe the Sabre models have the same performance as the Toltec. I'm pretty sure if you put a 4" coil on any of them you will get the same performance you get now with with the addition of tone id. Dual tone units like the Golden Sabre II give a lot of info that make them easier to use than a metered unit like the Toltec. Say you just want to discriminate ferrous from non ferrous. Set your tone control to give one tone for ferrous and the higher tone for non-ferrous and just leave your disc at minimum. Along those same lines suspose you want to completely disc out small iron but still want to hear the larger peices and still tell iron apart from non-iron. Use the disc setting to knock out or break up that small stuff you want to ignore, use the tone control to tell you iron vs non iron. Same thing in modern trash. You can clean a area pretty well using adjustable tone settings.

There doesn't seem to be that much difference in depth in the standard Tesoros-my Royal seems to match my Silver umax in depth. I don't know about those w/the HOT technology.

I have enjoyed tone id on other detectors I've owned. I have never had one that just used two tones. I honestly had never thought about the scenario you explained about ferrous v. non-ferrous with low discrimination. That makes a good deal of sense. Hombre gave me a tip for fine tuning the ground balance on my Toltec, and it needed to be re-set. Perhaps I'll be able to get some extra depth now that it's properly ground balanced. Thanks for the info, fellers.
