I checked the depth on my detector

Hi cassiekariemom. No, the circuit is fixed but a larger coil would
get another inch or two if its available.

I'm surprised that you got 4-5" on a quarter with a Radio Shack. I wouldn't invest any more money on coils or other gadgets that they say will increase your depth. Find enough of clad coins to pay that one off and then sell it, to recoup the rest. Then go on E bay or similar and buy a used, higher end model. This is the only way to get a top of the line machine for a reasonable price. I have see some White's Eagle Spectrums go for as little as 250.00. They are about 15 years old, but are a really nice machine. As for new, the Garrett Ace 250 is getting rave reviews. Not my cup pf tea, but maybe worth looking into. Others will tell you about some used and new machines to check into also. Give us a price range and see what people here think. Good luck. HH

HELLO cassiekariemom. First of all, welcome to the awesome and addicting world of metal detecting! :detecting: You will find a lot of challenges, many friends, some frustrations and a lot of happiness.

I began with a simple non-discriminating metal detector such as yours about (ehem ) 30 years ago. While I found a lot of pulltabs and bottle caps, I also found many quarters, nickels and dimes ... and a $200 gold ring. My first and only gold until next time :) .Then I graduated to a :garrett: Garrett Money Hunter TR. Bought it used for $100. It paid for itself many times.

Today I have a :garrett: Garrett Ace 250. This is a great little machine, especially if you get the Sniper coil. It doesn't cost a whole lot.

So have some fun with what you already have. Check out some parks, your own yard, etc. Many coins are in fact found in the first 4 inches of soil. There is a lot of information on this very forum for you, and a lot of very nice, helpful people.

If you're thinking about another detector, may I suggest a
Tesoro Compadre for $151 from online dealers. This unit
is a real sleeper, without bells and whistles, but very, very
efficient at finding coins at good depths, especially in trashy
ground. It comes with a 5.75 inch coil, small but really
effective!

You will need a detector with a larger coil so that you can get extra depth, I am guessing the BH you have has a small coil.
