I can't find any info on this coin/token

I have had this since I was a kid and recently started looking for info on it with no luck.

I took some really close up images of it tonight and discovered a date and some sort of mark. On the back at the bottom is says Cornell. This coin is slightly smaller than a penny so I did not see these marks until I shot the photos.

Any ideas?

Ive looked all over...cant find anything...but am guessing might be service station coin ...given as promo..just a guess.....Curt

The Cornell I believe could be David Cornell..in 1965 he won a Royal Mint selection, which made him an appointed coin and medal engraver in Wales Great Britian...he then spent a few years in USA and then accepted appointment with John Pinches Limited..a trophy and medal company who became affiliated with the Franklin Mint....so in short..might be from a Franklin Mint series set, they did bronze sets in late 60s...not totally sure if this helps or not....Curt

Thanks Curt! I too came up with David Cornell engraver while doing a search this morning. I sent him the photos and asked him if he is in fact the engraver of this coin, and any info he might remember about it. I am waiting for his response and will post here when I get it.

Thanks!

Here is David's response.

"Thank you for sending the images of the Franklin medal.

It is a complete mystery. Although I went to the State in February 1968 and this looks like my signature and it looks clearly like a Franklin Mint medal, I didn't do it. I have a catalogue of Franklin Mint medals of that period and it isnt in there. The only tokens they produced at that time were for casinos and it is clearly not one of these.
The title of this coin is listed in their catalogue but that was in 1972 but no picture.

Although this has the Franklin Mint sign on it, Franklin Mint were only producing proof silver medals at that time. It is very strange. What metal is your medal, it doesn't look like silver proof and what size? This would have also been issued with some literature. There were no other sculptors working at the mint with a similar name either!!!!!

Sorry I cant be of any more help but as I say it is a mystery to me!"

Kind regards
David Cornell.

Very strange indeed, dont see how Franklin Mint would have gained anything by copying his signature on another coin?

I don't know much about it, but HAVE seen another.
early 70s upstate NY.
