I am now a proud Tesoro owner!

I picked up a Tesoro Silver Max Plus today for $35 from a Craig's List ad. I checked it out and it worked fine, although the batteries said "Best if used by October 2005". There is also a little corrosion around the coil connector, which I can use some advice on cleaning. I air tested a quarter in "Discriminate" mode and estimate about 10 inches next to a noisy highway without headphones!!

It came complete with a manual, and a 1987 KellyCo catalog!!

I wanted to have a back up for my $1000 +++ W*****'s detectors. At this price I can leave it in my Jeep for impromptu detecting without worrying.

I plan on giving it a test run with some fresh batteries at a park near my office during lunch tomorrow.

With me luck!

Congrats Neil

Did it come with the 7 inch solid white coil? If so, that is an impressive air test. Good luck with your new/old 'back up'.

It came with the 8" open center concentric coil.

Hey Neil I will give ya $36.00 for it without even seeing it, lol. You'll love the Tesoro, there are great detectors no matter how old or new they are. Steve.

Silver Sabre Plus? Tesoro didn't make a Silver Max Plus to my knowledge, but they did release a Silver Sabre Plus to replace the original Silver Sabre back in 8/'86. The thin, white 8" coil was my favorite 8" from Tesoro. I found them to be good/not-so-good depending, depending upon the particular specimen and the ground conditions. Touchy GB, and they got a bit "quirky" in some hunting environments. Some seem to have good performance from them but I didn't. I was a Tesoro Dealer at the time they were released and didn't care for them. I picked one up in a trade deal about 10 years ago but it just didn't work well. GB too negative for my very mineralized ground, and tweaking didn't help all that much as the depth was terrible.

I think I put the white 8" on the Bandido II that I had at the time and then sold it for parts or whatever. If it works for you, great!

I always keep at least one detector along for those opportunities that seem to pop up from time to time.
