I have about $500-$600 to spend on a digital when my taxes come and I have read and read reviews and digital camera forums and can't find a damn camera that I feel is worth that kind of money. I absolutely do not want some cheesy little pocket sized camera, I don't care how good it is. I have used a Minolta Maxxum 5000 for years, it is junk compared to other 35mm's but it takes kick a$$ pictures! It is just getting old buying film and spending $7.00 to have one roll developed. So, anyway, I was almost sure I wanted a Minolta Dimage 5 because I could use my 49mm filters and use a RC-1000s/l remote cord on both. Then I start reading the Minolta brand specific forum, and they talk about the Auto focus being slow, auto focus being off and having to check in manual to see if it is on, auto focus not working in low light and the port covers being junk and have to be taped up out of the box to stay closed, pictures being noisy, battery hog, etc. etc. That is an awful lot of money for me (just wanting a camera to take pictures of finds, ebay auctions, make some prints, etc.)to spend on something with problems like that. But every other camera in that price range doesn't seem as nice as that one. At least the Dimage has a 7X APO lens.
I don't know, I am about tempted to wait till prices come down more, but I need/want one now. Any suggestions?

I don't like to buy anything mediocre. I like to have the best I can get, just the way I am. I am not very happy with anything that I have to "settle" on. I want a Nikon D1X, but that is just not possible. And like I said earlier, I want an SLR sized camera, those little tiny ones just don't appeal to me. To be quite honest, if I could use one before I bought it a while, I could probably be happy with a cheaper one, but just buying blindly over the net scares me. I do all the time with everything else, but I mean a camera that I haven't had in my hands. Everywhere around here just has the little cheapies, with an occasional mavica, but I really don't want a camera with plastic lenses!
I know I want too much, but I really want to make a wise investment that will last me a few years before I need to upgrade.

I too like the BEST!.. Let me tell you a storie about a good cam I passed by. One time I was in this store and saw a SLR cam
FOR $60
, but I did not know anything about cams so I didn't buy it And it could have been a good one to
(Short storie )

I think I am a bit like Ric. I usually over buy because on the few occasions that I didn't, I was sorry.
I don't know much about cameras. Never really had an interest but when I bought, I bought a pretty good one. An Olympus 3030 zoom. That thing does things that I sure the heck don't understand but if I want to I can. I love the pictures it takes and even though I only used the movie mode once and never use the sound, I like to have the ability.
Usually if I want to post finds, I scan them. I find it easier and am a bit lazy. My closeuups suck but it is my fault and not the cameras.
Many say they want a camera, only to post finds and the probablly mean it but some end up going beyond that and have to upgrade.
I see the closeups Mike made with his camera of the bill and a person couldn't want much better in my view.
I just wanted to get the best I could afford so I would not be disapointed later. Worked for me :0)

I can't find one around here or I would. I might go ahead and get one anyway. They seem to sell for about new price on Ebay if I were not to like it. I hate to just go by peoples word that I do not know on those photo forums, I wish I could find someone I know on the detecting forums that have one.
Most people on there are happy with them, I of course searched for the negatives so I would not have any surprises if I got one. I am probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. They have pictures posted that have been taken with them and they look really nice.

I want something that I can grow into. I don't no jack about Digital cameras and I might be bitting off more than I can chew, but I am a pretty quick learner and I don't figure something too complicated will hold me back long. I have patience and will figure it out before I throw it in a lake. I would really probably do just fine with a cheaper camera, but I just don't want everytime I use it to be "I wish I would have got XXXXX instead." I want something I will be happy with for more than the first couple of days.

I don't think I could every get used to a camera that did not have a regular, through the lens, view finder.

You need to get that Dimage camera in your hands and see if it feels good to you before you put confidence in other peoples reports.......
Cool?
That's my recommendation.....

I just bought this new computer ( which is taking for ever to get here ) and it comes whith a cheap eZonics cam that only takes 12 1.8 MegaPixel pictures on its SMALL internel mem card.( only half a million effactive pixels ) So there, you see. I got the worst one The best resolution is 800X600...
By the way, can anyone find me a 1.8 (half a million effactive/P) picture so I can see what it will look like?
Thanks!

You have to use a tripod when zooming out that far. This is true of any camera with that much zoom. One good feature of the FD75 is that the zoom is OPTICAL. The other type of zoom is known as DIGITAL which is not nearly as good as your Optical feature as far as printing out the picture. I usually take a couple of shots (and NOT pics) if I am going to zoom out very far. Helps steady the ole nerves.
