I adjusted the disc mode pre-set ground balance trimmer pot

on my Cortes slightly more positive so that I could detect a dime buried 7" in my test garden. Great, after the adjustment I could pick up the dime in disc mode. But when I passed the coil over the coins that are buried 4" and 5" deep the meter indicated IRON mostly and the SUM mode tones were mostly iron tone. Then I re-adjusted the trimmer back the way it was before and now the meter and tones seem to be OK again. It seems like the pre-set GB trimmer affects the ID system. Any one have any insight here? >>>EDITED: I will adjust the GB trimmer again so that it picks up the 7" dime. Then I will adjust the meter trimmer pot. (Both pots are next to each other, the GB pot is to the left.). Maybe that's the answer.

I adjusted the gb pot on my Silver umax for the worst ground in my area and that was a mistake. I gained a little depth but lost the "trash talk" characteristics on some targets because I had a lot of overrun on some ground that wasn't that bad in certain areas. I tweaked it back to a setting on the "normal ground" that is prevalent in most spots. My reasoninig was that since the a/m mode is not a true a/m that it would always be more positive than a setting with true a/m. Now it's the same ole' quiet Silver with maybe a hair more depth but with the ole' familiar signal characteristics.

I worked with both trimmers and could not get any decent balance, ID system was still off. So I reset the trimmers back to where they originally were, detector is working as it was before. All Metal mode gets the 7" dime, but Disc mode gives only a tic at times.

is it possible to post photos of the inside of your cortes so i can work out the gb for the am mode on the deleon(hawkeye) if possible please

For Cortes, the two blue pots near the bottom. The one on the left is for Disc mode GB, turn CCW for more positive GB. The one on the right is for meter. Be careful, pots are delicate.

thanks jabbo looked in side my Deleon(hawkeye) were you have 2 pots i have four so reason has it the other 2 must be gb for am mode
but there is one top left corner black and top right corner blue
thanks

jabbo were i have circled in red does these wires lead to your gb pot on the cortes front
sorry i have not got a good camera to post pictures my self
all so on the left hand side of the big IC i have 4 vacant solder points 3 lead to my mode switch
thanks for the picture it helped a lot tracing my gb trim pots

Jabbo, thanks for the useful tip about the trimmer locations. I just purchased a Cortes (I have been a Garrett GTI2500 user before) and although the Tesoro seems like a really sensitive machine the preset ground balance for the Disc mode is set way off for the areas I go to and using discrimination is virtually impossible. It gives short silver 95 signals all the time. I thought that adjusting the GB manually for the Disc circuit will be easy but looking at this thread I realized that there are two knobs. Any info on how to adjust the preset GB and still keep accurate ID will be much appreciated... What does the meter trimmer do exactly?

Something else I just observed. Rotating the GB knob (the regular one) while in Discriminate bode produces two beeps somewhere in the middle of the range and some display changes. This knob does something even in Disc mode, but exactly what I can not figure out. If someone knows, please share.

Geko, Rotating the GB knob while in Disc mode gives me the same beeps and meter changes as you get. In my test garden I have a dime buried 7", can't pick it up in Disc mode, get only tiny short beeps sometimes. In Disc mode, even when regular GB knob is full positive or full negative it does not help get that dime. It will get a dime at 6" in Disc mode. Soil in my area is mild, soft, and kind of sandy, easy digging but stuff sinks deep. The trimmer pot in the upper left corner is for meter contrast. I don't know what the black trimmers do. The GB knob on my CZ7a seems to affect both modes, when GB is full negative a buried coin makes a shorter beep than when GB is full positive, in Disc mode. I would send the Cortes to Tesoro with soil sample for pre-set GB adjustment, I tried doing it myself, it messed up the meter. I tried adjusting the meter trimmer, it didn't help. So I reset trimmers to original settings as best I can.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Sending my unit back to Tesoro for adjustment is absolutely my last option, because that would mean that I will basically lose half the season in waiting for it's return... and I can not be certain of the results either. I need to find a way to adjust this myself and fine tune and readjust it if necessary later. The Cortes has been around for so many years that I can not fathom that no one has been able to do this successfully. There must be a way to do this. After all, all they would probably do in the factory is to rotate a few internal knobs a little. I am sure there is even a way to put external knobs for GB-ing in Disc mode. It has been done on some other machines in the Tesoro line. If anyone knows more, please share or point me to a resource somewhere.

:ukflag:hiya guys,,listen,,on all trim pots it pays if you are adjusting machine to use a 1 inch piece of ferrite, you know the aerial pole out of an old transistor radio,,and adjust the pot untill there is just a null on approach to the coil and a ping as you move away from the coil,,as this is how they should be set or the nearest you can set them with the stock 3/4 turn pot fitted,,for example if you change a coil and have no adjustable ground balance this is how you do it,,,check youtube,,,rgds comcat:ukflag:

rang up Pentechnic the repair centre for tesoro in the uk yes the gb mod in am mode could be done but keep on saying WHY would you want it its my money to waste
so why should we spend more money on a cortes if the DELEON(HAWKEYE) IS BETTER THAN THE cortes
or why would any body want to do the TESORO CIBOLA mod if it has no affect

some other people was slaging of the repair center
this is the responce i got from the center
Woody,

What I said on the phone was:
Yes, you could have a ground control fitted to the all metal circuit.
Adjusting this would not affect the disc mode or meter.
If you had a ground control fitted to the disc circuit and it wasn't set right then it would affect the meter readings.

Dave

does this mean if u put a gb on disc and do set it up right u have gb on am and disc

Dear Monte, thank you very much! This was just the info I needed. Some last short questions...

1. Do you remember which direction on the trimmer does positive GB and which negative?
2. While adjusting over the mineralized ground in Disc mode what are you judging by - you try to make the occasional erratic short sounds disappear?
3. Lastly, can all this be done with a small metal screwdriver? (I read somewhere that it needs to be plastic, but it didn't make much sense)

Again, thanks a lot!
