Hunting with the F4

An interesting couple days with my trusty F4.

Yesterday I worked another beach which is not so busy and apparently not so worked also. They dump the raked sand at one end and it builds up to a small 5 foot 'cliff'. I hunted the cliff bottom at the water line over about a 50 foot length. Picked up a nice stainless steel knife, pot metal (feels like lead) mask with a strange looking face, a couple black quarters staring back at me (apparently tumbled down from washed out portion of cliff), 2 lead fishing sinkers, chrome hinge (probably from a boat), 2 keys, a fishing lure minus the hooks, a strange lead? ring and a strange copper ring.

I then tried the cliff top and picked up about a buck's worth of clad and a nice silver earring.

An unusual experience altogether..the silver earring made my day but I really enjoyed finding the cliff bottom items too. Seems the F4 finds me more non coin items.

So today I decided to visit my usual beach after supper. Can only get in about an hour before it's too dark. Well things were picked clean by 3 or 4 other 'detectorists. I decided to just sweep a new (for me) section after getting ZERO at my usual place. I picked up a clad dime fairly quickly...I wasn't gonna be skunked at least. The next signal was about 2 minutes later. Pickings were slim here too. This was a 71..hmm..maybe a dime but probably a penny. I shook my scoop and it felt a little heavy. Out popped a DIAMOND WEDDING RING! Big 1ct with six little diamonds. I thought the ring was white gold or platinum but saw .925 inside.

Walking back to the car, about 10 minutes early, my wife was reading inside. She asked me how I did. I said just 2 dimes...except one was actually a diam-OND. Let me see...let me see. She tried it on. Darn..it was too small for her <smile>. No names engraved inside so it is a little sad that I can't return it. As much as I enjoyed finding it I imagine the loss for the owner is much more significant.

SO...what I'm learning from my F4 with the 8" coil...it likes to find me EVERYTHING. The downside is the junk I dig..it finds it all. I run it usually at 2 mark disc. This just finds me the bigger foil and fast food ketchup packs. Just about everything over a 35 is a keeper (I keep all the keys and sinkers). Pennies at about 60, dimes at 70, Quarters at 80... OH and that reminds me..the display DOES go to 100 and not 99 I was surprised to see that 3rd digit there. As it turns out it was a phantom signal...couldn't get it to repeat no matter how hard I tried to make it real.

Very pleased with the F4.

Hey Joe,

Checked out your report on the F-4. Thanks.

My question is the depth. What kind of depth were you getting? Coins?

Thanks,

Rob in Tennessee

Hi Rob,

Depths for coins are about 4" max and the ring was at about the same depth...so not that much of a challenge. Soda cans get picked up at over 15".

I did the same two beaches today..the first one after lunch for an hour and the second after dinner for an hour. I picked up 3 quarters a dime and 5 pennies plus a Sacajawea dollar. They were all at 4" deep or less. Second beach skunked me for the first time in 3 months.

Yesterday I worked a researched area that I had my eye on. It's a long dirt patch off a street curb used for parking. It's adjacent to an old industrial area that's been demolished for over 30+ years. The industrial area is fenced off and they are working there removing large buried tanks and junk. I did the outside the fence area but will try to get inside another day. The F4 had a good workout. Picked up a lot of unusual metal at depths up to 10".

Got my first silver coin! A 1952 Roosevelt Dime. Was at about 6" deep and what a beautiful ringing signal at 75. Silver in the hole...wow what a sight!

Also picked up a silver earring with a dangling black pearl from about 5".

Then got a "hazardous biological substance" emblem in chrome...hopefully off a necklace?

Last but not least...another RING! Unusual design. Not sure of the metallurgy it's quite corroded green but with some silver (apparently). I'll try to find some markings after cleaning it up a bit. It was only 2" deep.

With the beach season starting to slow down I was thinking of running some experiments in the sand burying coins at various depths. Maybe do my dozen or so rings too. It would be a great learning experience.

I really should post some photos too.
