Hunting with my brother...

Mirage

New member
Had a family get together for one of my 4 brothers birthday. Happen to be close to one of our recent hunting sites. So when we broke up for the evening one of my brothers(Dan) accompanied us. We have almost picked this place clean. But it was close by so we gave it another go. Dan had not done any metal detecting before so I gave him the White's Classic , threw a penny on the ground and told him to sweep over it. "Beep, Beep". Ok, hear that? Good. You are all set. I did help him a little more than that for the first 20 minutes but then he was on his own. He seemed to pick it up pretty quickly.

So we go our ways and he comes back all excited - here he found a Kennedy Half dollar. Not bad for a newbie!
I worked the edge of the parking lot where the asphalt meets the grass. This place is very trashy but I just took it very slow. Amounst the junk happen to be the 1945 Merc. Got a solid 38 signal and thought it was going to be a Quarter. Pleasant surprise.

The ground is so dry here and it is very hard digging so we haven't done much detecting. We did stop at my moms for about 45 minutes and I got another solid 38 hit. Down at about 3 inches was the silver ring. I believe it dates back to the early 1900's as most of the stuff we have found in this area dates to that time. Nate found the other interesting item - it's silver and has the date 1909 on it. Also can make out "Mason". No clue as to what it is.

Excellent! Not bad at all for an unplanned hunt.

So is he "bit" by the bug now?

But I doubt it. He always has a lot going on. Maybe if I planted a silver half dollar..... We use to go fishing together as kids. Metal detecting is kinda like fishing except there are more varieties of fish.

Nice finds Mirage WTG ! Great looking ring . The silver thing marked Mason 1909 looks to be the top cap for a cane or walking stick . Very Nice ...:minelab::beers:

Hello Mirage, great finds! You find a lot of really interesting stuff. The blue stone in the ring might be a topaz or aquamarine, with zircons around it. I'd get it checked by a jeweler out of interest's sake. In the second photo, the ring is resting on something with a crest looking design. Do you know what the relic is? Is that an old pushbike bell in the second last photo?

Hi Bob
Nice finds. Sounds like your brother had a good time. I just got back from the mound at WP not far from the barber and seated hole I was able to pull out an 1876 indian head, beautiful shape full liberty on the headband. I cant beleive there's still coins coming out of there. I also got a 1905 indian head on the way back to my truck. I'm in kind of a silver slump stuck at 89 pieces. Our temperature shot up into the 90's with high humidity so I spent most of the day water hunting but no luck. At least it's not raining. I've got the indians soaking I'll post pictures tomorrow. Take care, tell Nate I said hello.
