Hunting Railroad tracks?

New member
is this a viable option? Ive been thinking about taking a walk down the track... is it feasible to search the ground immediatley on the sides of the track itself? or does one get too many false returns, or whatever you would call it. i mean, obviously train tracks have been around and well travelled for many years. i assume they arent a good spot to look or id here people mentioning them. thanks

You might find yourself charged with trespassing. In my area the railroads have their own police force, and they take trespassing on RR property pretty seriously. Come to think of it, that's probably the only thing they have to do all day!

Howdy DanielEtvs

I work on the BNSF,and I know how much big iron there is out ther on the RR. There are tie plates, RR spikes, tie anchors, and various assorted iron junk along the RR. Be fore warned!!!!!!!!! Besides the RR Police, also known as Bulls. HH......Hombre

Dan, I'd be the last person to say you'll find nothing valuable there...

But Trains are big, and there's a LOT of steel and iron. and trash and scrap.

Their right-of-way is all private property, probably with a few exceptions.

Messin' around by the public transport system might not be a good idea,
with homeland security and folks like that all champing at the bit to earn their paycheck.

If you're gonna do it, be prepared to greet enforcement types with your biggest smile!
I wouldn't want to be seen near tracks with a digging tool... Yikes!

Isn't there some other place that has caught your eye?

I maid some good finds along a section of old RR bed, the tracks have been removed about 20 yrs ago, My best 1906 injun,,, Still looking foward to hunting it more !!!!!

One option that I do,is get permission to hunt around old Train Depot's.Most of them are owned by private individuals in town. There is an old Depot in every small town around where I live, and I have recovered some good finds.I would stay away from the tracks. HH-Kurt

I hunt similar areas here once in a while, some of the old right of ways were turned into trails. haven't found much yet but i keep searching

Takes a special type of machine for hunting close to big iron.

This is soo true. Don't laugh, but a few weeks ago I was shooting a bride, her mother wanted some shots of her running down train tracks for some reason. Bear in mind this was in the middle of PODUNK Tn. When we were finishing up, two sheriff's cars came barreling up the side of the tracks to us, when the father of the bride walked toward them the first officer put his hand on his SIG and told him to get back by his car. They said someone called and said there were people putting something white on the tracks, that is about the time the bride stepped out from behind the SUV, and I said yup sure were, and there she is.... We did not get into trouble, because the mother of the bride took the time to call the RR before we went out there, but the cops said it is private property from the center of the tracks to 50' out. Watch yourself.
