Hunting On the sly

So I know more and more people are detecting due to tv shows and other reasons . And I have noticed finds in my area even getting a bit thin but I never see anyone ever detecting .

I have Been going out very early to avoid the heat ,people, kids, park guys and just have some quiet time o what I'm wondering is what time do you prefer to hunt?

I even prefer the light rainy days to the heat.....

i hunt the same as you..early and dark and rainy....I have seen guys out in the middle of the day detecting..I cant do it, unless I'm in the water up to my neck...I cant take much heat and about NO sun...

I detect any time I can , I had a very good field I was out detecting at 530 am recently..haven't tried late at night like some folks though

if you hunting new money you're not going to find much until the economy gets better.i've hunted since 1971 and once the older coins were thinned out i noticed that bad economies meant less coins being lost. good luck

I prefer dark overcast days or late afternoons. The last couple hrs usually is not as hot here in New England.

And Chuck, that's interesting. I've hunted three schools at the ballfields on the scool property. I have the Xterra 705 with the digger coil that's known to be a coin killer. I've had it a couple months now and can't find one silver at these shools. The schools were built in the 70's though but still. Not one stinkin Rosie even! And not one wheatie .its not the detectors fault. All these schools were once farm fields. I think they've been pounded out..I recently read guys finding a few old silvers on 70's built schools because of what was there before. .HH

All things being equal, i'd prefer hunting at sunrise.
But i can't. When i retired, i threw away all my alarm clocks! :heh:

I typically hunt after a lunch, don't sweat the small stuff and call it a day.

Another thing that determines my hunting time. My furry son. Tonka are little dog of 16 yrs sleeps in to at least 8:00am. He then requires his morning walk to the woods. People think I'm crazy and say " the heck wit that dog wake him up at 4:30 am and make him go. Nope. He's my buddy. That's the way he likes his mornings. I don't get out till after 9ish if I even bother to hunt mornings. I'm retired,,,so doesn't matter when or if I go today.
Apologize for my longwinded threads. I'm retired! Now I'm the guy that I used to laugh at or avoid because they're old and want to talk forever! HH all

Hey Digdoggy, ain't retirement great!

I'd like to take my black lab along detecting, but the first squirrel and he's gone.
Tried the leash thing once, never again.:rage:

digdoggy You forgot to mention that Us Old Retired folks only detect on Saturdays and on the rare occasion on Sunday. Of course our week consists of Six Saturdays and Only one Sunday.

The time of year and the outside temperatures help me to determine what time I go detecting. During the winter months I give the temps a little time to warm up before I go out but during the Summer I get up early and try to be at my destination as near to daylight as possible.

Usually in my area the temps are in the high 80's to low 90's by noon and by that time I have had enough of the heat and humidity.

When I detect the beach I allow the tide to determine when I detect as I like to start an hour or two before dead low time and detect until I either get tired or too hot to continue. Even wading the Summer Sun gets vicious in my area of the world.

Chuck,ky... brought up a disturbing point..a monumental shift in human/lifestyles regarding freshdrops. Kids are NOT playing outside anymore as much, add to that the fake rings people wear now a days...I bet there were no stainless steel, or tungsten or crap like that being worn in the 70's...anyway, its something to take into account on the hunt...

Great point Mud. Also everyone pays with bank cards nowadays too so less change in the pockets

I have a very well to do area park (1-2 mill $ homes ). What did. Find in the park...... Nothing .....guess they don't carry cash???

Yep, and I'm shocked that I've been hitting these 2 schools and not one wheatie, not a silver and I've got a silver sniffing outa trash 800 dollar rig. Also here's a friekin high school with huge ballfields tennis soccer , this is a big complex. People walk dogs all over it. It had farms on it before built and I can't hit ONE stinkin rosie or a wheat cent. Clad from 1966 and up. Of coarse millions of twistoff tops, can lids, and all kinds of trash. Gotta get that coil over some old coins cause,,,,I Got A Sliver Jones here. I'm jonsen for them old..
later fellow old dudes.

Yeah I thought about taking my half chauaua half pomeranian (Tonka) but he's so spoiled I couldn't detect with him. He walks 3 ft stops sniffs for 5 minutes and repeats. Drives ya crazy when you want to walk. So he sleeps in, slowly gets up, stretches then stands by the door waiting for his big walk n sniff.

Yeah good points!
When we were kids back in the 50-60s, we were outside all the time. Parents had to beg and threaten to get us in the house at days end. Today there's xbox, facebook, cell phones etc. Now adays parents have to beg to get their kids outside.
I can't remeber carrying any money back then except maybe for school lunches. But now the gov provides free lunches to most kids these days.
I gotta say though and here's the rub, i don't search tot lots that much but when i do, i always find tons of clad either dropped from parents or kids? Who knows.

Anyhow, personally i'm not interested in fresh dropped clad. I'll take it if i find it but i try to hunt places with a history. Every once in a while, i'll search a known clad park, usually when in the middle of a silver drought. LOL!
