Hunting old home.

I noticed an old home which was probably built in the late 20s or early 30s. The home was abandoned. I began my search for the owner. It took me over a month but I found the owner which turned out to be a corporation. They had bought the home and property to make room for a new subdivision. They were going to tear the home down but they did not know when. They gave me permission to hunt the property to my hearts content. The home has been vacant for 4 or 5 years and you can imagine what the lawn looked like. A riding lawn mower was needed, but I did not have access to one. When swinging the coil over the surface you have about 4 or 5 inches of grass to deal with. I stomped on the grass to flatten it down which did give me better results in detecting finds. I had only had my MXT a short time and I was still learning its ability. When I began searching the lawn I was unable to detect anything at all. I knew that there had to be something, so I began to make adjustments to the detector. I began tweeking the knobs and in doing so, I began to get results. I found that by backing off on the gain somewhat resulted in more finds. I have been able to recover 7 silver coins, buffalos, wheaties and old and new clad coins. I have hunted the property for about 10 days and now the finds are few and far between. I have a choice to make, have the lawn mowed or wait until the demolition begins and they scrape the lawn. The lawn is pretty big and I know it will cost a pretty penny to have it mowed. I keep thinking that there is still more to be found. I'll let you know what I decide. Just remember when hunting the old homes to be patient and go slow. The treasure is there. HH Dennis in Idaho

Hope you have luck finding more. I have always found targets easier after a good rain.

Just a thought
Bob

Just a thought that came to mind, try using a 4 x 8 sheet of old plywood about 1/4 and drill 2 holes thru one end on each side and thread a piece of rope thru it. Then it is just a matter of getting it to the site a laying it down on the grass. Step on it all the way around and then detect. Figure your target approximate and move the plywood to another area and then retrieve the target. Like I said just a thought but it will flatten the grass and not harm it. Good Luck
PS, when I said tie the rope thru the two holes I meant for that to be used as a tow type for dragging it.

Hi I saw your post and was wondering if you were in the Boise area? If so you can go to the county courthouse and look up property on the maps and then they can tell you who the owner is. I have done this durring the winter to find places for spring and summer. I have had my MXT for a few months but don't get to go too often. Good luck. T.C. Boise

I live in Caldwell. When I began hunting for the owner of this home I contacted the county assessor. They gave me the name of the owner, but would not give me further info. I did a web search and lucked out. I have been trying to find the owner of another old home in Middleton. I went to city hall with no luck, and then to the post office. They advised me the best way to find an owner is by going thru planning and zonning. I haven't done it yet, but I will do it soon. I am tired of parks and I want old homes. Finding the owners of homes that have been unoccupied is really tough especially if you find out the owner is a corporation. You find that so many people are involved. Maybe I will run into you in the field. By the way why don't you get out much? HH Dennis in Idaho

The canyon county should have a place to look up property on a map and then give you a name and address in a matter of minutes. As I said before That Ada co. courthouse second floor (i think) is where I have gone. I don't get out too often because the rest of the family doesn't yet have the bug! But I am working on them. The first detector I bought was the GMT new and did some hunting up by Idaho City, haven't found any gold nuggets yet.
I have found lots of brass and lead, one piece of brass was a .41 cal. rim fire maybe 1870 era. My old boss owns property at Placerville and said that I could detect and pan as much as I wanted. So maybe this summer! Thanks for the reply, maybe I will run into you out there or set something up. T.C Boise
