Hunting in the water by the beach-ocean and lakes

Todd S

Heh all,

Can someone tell me if it is even worth my time hunting in the shallow water at lake and ocean beaches with the Quick draw? My wife and I thought it may be fun to give it a try, but everything I have heard so far is that this detector definately is not the best for this kind of hunting. Has anyone tried it and had any luck? Any pointers without buying a special detector?

Thanks

Do not think it will do so hot in salt water, but on fresh water, it should be OK...just keep the control box DRY...I have never hunted in water yet, so I cannot give you a positive answer here...

Todd, I have the Pioneer 202 which is the exact same machine as the QDII. The only difference is the name and it's sold at Walmart. I have hunted fresh water lakes and rivers with the 202 and found coins and jewelry. It works fine. I've never gone deeper than a foot or so. As long as you keep the control box out of the water your good to go. Now I have hunted wet saltwater beaches and it's a different story there. Most detectors will have a problem with wet salt water. You have to really work the sensitivity and DISC. I've never had any luck, for me it's just easier to work the dry sand, works great there. Hope this helps.

Only problem I have with the freshwater beaches is if I get too deep I have a hard time digging the target. If you are in a foot of water and the target is 6" deep you are 18" below the surface. If there are waves then the target gets washed around and hard to keep track of. Just my experience.

Hello Todd,
I live within a short drive from miles of beaches. I have a QDII and I've done little hunting saltwater hunting but alot of sand and along the shore. I rather do my hunting in dry sand and my QDII does every well in locating and identifying targets. Happy Hunting.

Yes, I have had good luck finding coins in the sand too. Haven't really tried in the water yet at all, but summer is coming and the wife loves the water and wants to give it a try. (I just ordered some waders too!)

You'll find that the unit will false dramatically on the wet sand and in the water at salt water locations. I have however used the BH T4 for this type of detecting a lot. If you slow down your swing speed and keep your coil height constant (2") and turn the sensitivity down to around 12 0'clock, you may do OK. I have gotten lots of coins and jewelery in about 1' or less of salt water it just takes a bit of tenacity. HH regards Nugget.:detecting:
