Hunting in Relic Mode?

I don't say to hunt in relic mode but I do like to hunt in relic mode. I never bother with the icons all I look at are the VDI numbers and the probability bars. So I don't care if it says penny, button etc. The VDI numbers are the same in C/J or Relic mode. I can run the gain higher in relic primary mode (trigger in center position) and have a smooth threshold without the chatter. In my ground I can usually run +2 or +3 with no problem. I can also sweep the coil slower in this mode. The Relic Mode audio tones can be very beneficial in distinguishing iron from non-ferrous targets. Sweeping real slow I can hear the iron and then the good target next to it.

If I have to hunt in real trash, I lower the gain to prevent masking from fringe targets. In this case ( lower gain) the chatter is not so bad and I can run the C/J mode if I want.

Here is a Jeff Foster post I copied a while back.

C&J and Relic Alternate search mode are identical in terms of mixed mode audio operation. The odd mode is Relic Primary search mode. This mode also uses the MXT style of mixed mode, but the all-metal portion of the signal here uses a slower internally fixed S.A.T. speed. This slower S.A.T. speed tends to interact with EMI a bit less and therefore allows a smidgeon higher GAIN setting to be used with stability and allows a slightly slower sweep speed

Good Hunting, Rob

I also took the suggestion and began useing the relic mode. I like it now. Note that the target ID sund is different than in is in C/J mode, but it makes no difference. I've had a lot of luck running it this way and useing the 5.3 coil. Another person suggested the use of the excellerator coils (see them at Kellyco.com). They have an 8inch DD coil that can be used with the MXT. This helps lots when hunting on farmland that is has high iron content.

Good Luck
