Hunting in pinpoint mode.......F4

New member
The manual that I read online says that it is possible to hunt in the pinpoint mode as long as drift is overcome by periodically repressing the pinpoint mode and that this pinpoint mode offers the "greatest sensitivity to large, deeply-buried objects....." First of all, is there a way to stay in pinpoint mode without having to continuously hold the pinpoint button down, and secondly, is there a greater battery drain in pinpoint mode? Thanks for any help.

Have an F2 not the F4 so I have never held one, but I just looked at the manual.

Don't quote me, but it appears you do have to keep that button pressed to hunt in pinpoint mode.
This mode utilizes no disc, and is the deepest.

Auto tune is similar, but you will need to have movement of the coil over the target vs pinpoint which will keep sounding off with no motion, and in that mode you listen for a change in the threshold tone.

The general rule is the more disc you use in any mode, the less depth you will get.

Also, every time your detector makes a sound it is using battery power, and in pinpoint mode it will be the loudest and constantly on, so you will drain the batteries the fastest.

Headphones do help immensely to use less power than that speaker.

Hope this is,nt a dopey question but why would you want to hunt in PP. I cant see any advantage that you would,nt get by hunting with the disc off if maximum depth is the aim? If the answer is obvious please say so,I,m still green.

Thanks for your replies. Well, according to the manual this mode offers the"greatest sensitivity to large, deeply-buried objects.....", which --as far as I know--means that the pinpoint mode would offer greater detection depth--which, of course, would be desirable in some situations. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think I read somewhere that someone had installed a toggle switch to keep this mode on continuously.

I have had an F4 for about 8 months now and love it. You do not have to hold down on the pin point button. Simply press it once and it will stay on. But, I have had no need to hunt in pin point mode. Knock out iron, foil, screw caps and pull tabs for the first few hunts and learn the tones of coins. After you are comfortable with these tones knock out only iron and learn the new tones. Now if you really want to go deep you can notch out every thing and by this time you have already learned the tones which is the most important part of learning your machine. Now you can combine the tones and the target ID numbers and pretty much know what you are digging before you ever see it. All n all just get to know you machine and you will be a very successful metal detectorist. I don't quite understand why anyone would want to hunt in pin point mode with their F4. It would restrict you most than help you. If you have notched out certain items while hunting and get a questionable signal, simply hit the DISC button and it will open your machine up. (No discrimination) this will allow you to check any questionable signals with the most depth. Press it again and will go back to your original settings. With the DD coil this machine is a coin killer.
