hunting in conductive questions.....

I have permission to hunt our local fairgrounds (1905) and have made about 8 trips there for around probably 15hrs total with the Etrac. I've got about 600 coins with the E and maybe 85hrs total time on the E so I'm definately new to it. The grounds are typical trashy with lots of iron. I believe it's a prime candidate for TTF but I really struggle with that so far and have questions on that I'll save for later. Today I went back to the fairgrounds for 2.5hrs with the 6" eq2 with the intent of trying to pick out some deeper stuff. I dug 22 coins with only 2 wheaties that were shallow. I was digging stinkin lincolns and a few clad dimes and most were in the 4-8" range with about half of them being 6-8". Today (and previous days) but today in particular, I was getting LOTS of 1-38, 1-41, 1-40's along with the clunk and the usual bouncy #'s. I'd then try and check the signals with quickmask open and would get the usual 30-35 iron #'s and the cursor was hanging in the lower right and/or bouncing up top. For the most part pin pointing wasn't going to happen. I wasn't digging these 38's- 41's and the bulk of them were at or near the Et's max depth. I've been doing pretty good with the Et as long as I dig good sounding targets that hit from 2 different directions but I haven't really had much luck chasing any "iffy" or the deep thunkers with bouncy #'s. Our public areas are most likely just as trashy as anyone elses and the chatter is constant where ever you swing and quickmask is pretty much always cursor in lower right and/or bouncing and the tones/chirps sound more to me like falses but I'm a LONG way from knowing what this machine is telling me.

I run into these #'s a LOT along with what I mentioned above but today I had more that were at the end of the Et's depth range accompanied by the thunk. I haven't been able to unlock any real deep stuff....yet. 8" is about my deepest both with the Pro coil and the 6" eq2 but that was on a good clear signal. I know the easy answer is to dig em but I was hoping that a few of you guys could shorten up my learning curve if you have experienced what I mentioned above.......?????

Thanks......

Were you hunting in Manual or Auto Sensitivity? It can get pretty frustrating when that happens. I'm going to say, based on my experiences as well that those are falses. Usually created when in Manual Sens. Chasing an iffy signal that is 10" or more in depth is something I've quit doing at parks and fairgrounds. Everyonce in awhile I'll do it at home sites. Most of those turn up to be bent nails, rusty barbwire or fencing staples. We don't have a lot of square nails here in central Ne, but those will even sound better.

One nice thing about Quick Mask, wide open, you can listen to the length of the tone. Those nails will reveal their orientation as you circle them. The thunkers you speak of is just a dropping off in signal. Deep coins or coins on edge can do this as well. Once you've hit a "coin" type signal, wiggle that coil back and forth an inch or two and see if that signal stays consistent. As you do this start to pivot, keeping the coil on that same spot and don't stop that wiggle. What does your signal do and almost as important what does your threshold do.

Keep pivoting, wiggling and listening. Do you lose that signal? Does your threshold "null" then "TRY" and get a signal (sure sign of a false). Of course a consistent signal all 360

NebTrac has some good advice.
In my experience, those deep bouncy 1-30 to 40+ numbers are an indication that the eTRAC is at its threshold of detection.
Yes a lot of those are going to be deep corroded nails. However, i found over a dozen silver coins last year all over 10 inches deep with those exact iffy ID numbers.

First of all you have to be able to pinpoint the target. If you can pinpoint, its not a false. Then study the two-way IDs in both right angle directions using open mask. If you get that iffy ID one way and a more or less solid ferrous ID the other way, its usually a nail but not a 100% of the time.
The trick at least for me is to dig the good two-ways as painful as that sounds. After a while (and sore arms), a gut feeling will take hold on whether to dig or walk over.

Thanks a BUNCH to both of you and Neb Track that info should be made into a sticky....imo. Sounds like I'm on the right track and almost every time I try and "force" a "good" signal from the chirps, thunk, in between the nulling it hasn't worked. I'll take the advice, stick to what has been working for me and improve over time.

Yes, I was in manual and I usually hunt in auto+3 and using Andy S. pattern for the most part....

I've got quite a few spots, public and private, that I think TTF is needed but so far I struggle with it. I'll post a quick question about that later. I'm sure it's been answered before and I've read every post on TTF several times over this winter but it takes sooo long to re-read every post so I'll ask again....

Thanks again...!!!!!

I'm just the opposite I struggle in Conductive and kill it with TTF
