Hunting CW Campsite

I was hunting in a cornfield that was a CW campsite. Gain around 9 to plus 1, relic Mode,Des initially set at Zero, but cranked up to above tab after all I got was Iron readings. This was a campsite protecting the Mo-KS border, not a battlefield. Others have hunted here and pulled bullets & buttons out. All I got was Iron readings. My question is "What was I doing Wrong?"

It doesn't sound like you were doing anything wrong, I sure hope you dug the Iron signals allot of good civil war relics are made of Iron. You have to pass your coil over a bullet to get a nonferrous reading. The others may have already picked it clean if you go back to that area put a coil on that gets good depth and hunt it slow.......:detecting:

Go slow, very slow. Dig that iron, it may be masking a bullet. It might be that once in a lifetime find too! :surprised: You never know. HH, Nancy

It also depends how HOT the ground is. I was at a place, got an iron signal and dug just to see what it was, looking at the plug I saw a Mini ball stuck in the red dirt. I went over it again and still got a IRON signal. It wasn't until I removed it from the dirt that I got a high tone. Like Bob and Nancy both say "good SLOW and Dig the iron!!"

Joe's example is very good at showing why the only real discrimination or determination of a target is your eyes. The machine's best guess is only that, a guess.
