Hunting and Hunting

Ricki7

New member
The area I have hunted recently is posted no Hunting or Trapping , I have a permit from Niagara parks. Most people hunt the beach , I like the woods.
As I was exiting the woods the parks police , lights flashing pulled up and questioned me . We talked he asked to look in the car , I told him I had a permit, all is good.
People seeing the car parked all day thought I was bow hunting. He was polite and gave me some tips where other metal detectors had luck. Other than the cars passing by and
not liking the idea they thought I was being arrested, I enjoyed talking to him .
The land adjoins private land and I can see hunters hunting the area . November 15 , first day of shotgun , around here , I forgot about Bow and Black powder also
they have a early youth season. Maybe I'll get one of those orange buckets and keep a radio playing.
What I missed most after I gave up deer hunting was the quiet and nature being in the woods . Hiking brought back the connection with nature and now hunting has
added excitement and historical knowledge. I recently read ( Joseph Bennett of Evans ) the growing of New York's Niagara Frontier. Great for this area .
I'd like to hear your experiences .
Stay Safe , good luck

I hear you there Ricki, about the peace and solitude of being outdoors...I used to trap and fish and bowhunt, bowfish, etc....not any more since I got this detecting bug. All I do is detect! Cant get enough of it!
All those other sports had seasons and restrictions and then add to that the time and expense, which seemed to just keep going up every year...heck, a guy had to be a lawyer just to read the rules and regs..

Detecting fills that niche in my soul, I even wrote a poem about it that you might appreciate.

The Perfect Life

Oh to live on a beach in the Tropics in a house I built by hand, hunting coins and rings and other things from tourists in the sand! Or in the Outback harsh and sere where nuggets can be found, not the ones that post a pennyweight, the ones that post a pound! Alaska? Yes! In Summertime 'neath retreating glaciers tread, pulling globs of gold from gravel, big as a babies head!

Oh Joy! A subtle signal! A low and sultry tone, as sweet as Sirens singing to my auditory bone! Could it be a golden wedding band? A buried Roman hoard? A nickel or a pulltab? A nail stuck in a board?
Sweet Anticipation! You are a cruel god! I need some shine from time to time to keep me busting sod!

Headphoned up before the Sun, a signal for to dig, rooting up the terrasphere like a frenzied trufflepig! Not a peep escapes a prod, a fearsome force am I! Stuffing metal in my pouch as the world slumbers on by.
Scanning earth with urgent purpose like a dog after a bone, tick-tocking 'cross the Planet like a Human metronome!

Even at night I cannot sleep, adventures in my head, so off to the dangerous hunting grounds on the path of the World Wide Web. The keyboard is my trusty steed, my compass is a mouse, searching the World by satellite from the comfort of my house. The baleful glowing monitor, a perfect Hunters Moon! Wandering website wastelands like a digital Daniel Boone!

What is this grand obsession? A hobby or a sport? A mental aberration or addiction of some sort? Chores neglected at the house still yet this coil swing! One step from a bracelet, two steps from a ring! Three more to the silver, four to get the gold, five to hidden treasures, and riches yet untold! The Perfect Life a vision, swinging coil wild and free, digging holes in heat or cold 'til one is dug for me!

Mudpuppy sums this hobby up rather nicely.

Rick7, glad your experience with the park rangers was a good one. Stay safe with deer season upon us all. HH jim tn

Thanks jim tn.
Mud , I'm not sure what impress's me more , the meaning of your words , the way they flow ,or the ones I have to look up.
Happy Hunting

I'm semi retired and only work 4 days a week. I have Wednesday and Thursday off (I work Saturdays..blah!). So next week, I'll be deer hunting. I still like to do both, but I can see where metal detecting can take over everything, like Mud said. And Niagara Park? I bet that's a neat place!
And that was a great poem, Mud!

John , I have not hunted near the Falls , I think Niagara. County hunter may have. Niagara parks is the authority for the state parks in this area .
I hunt in the town of Evans, near Lake Erie and sometimes in Salamanca (we have a cabin near Allegany St. Park ). On property owned by Niagara parks I found a old camp,
that that may have closed in the sixties . In a small area near one of the sites may have been set up for kids games as I found about 30 pennies 1961 the latest year, 2 nickles one I can read 1961, a 36 and 41 merc dimes, one 1962 quarter. Also parts of kids toys , sinkers, knife and a lot of tokens that say no cash value. Close by is a old home from the about 1860, I found a 1902 badly worn quarter and lots of iron one piece looks like a miniature iron.
Near our cabin in the hills we found old celler holes that we are excited about , we found a1907 indian penny during our first hunt, we hope to get back before deer season.
I'm amazed and encouraged by seeing all the finds of the hunters on this site. I would like to thank everyone for sharing their knowledge , you guy's are great.
Thanks again

Muds pics are refreshing compared to clumps of mud stained coins, tabs, & aluminium slaw. More of us ought to show a pic of that boat dock, crowded beach, ball field, ruined foundations, etc. That produce these treasures.

I agree , I'm starting to take some pic's . Posting seems to be a problem , I read some on the other threads about posting , not something I'm use to.
The I pad is about all I use , I like to look things up while watching T V . Sometime I'd like to see a thread on places to go for people willing to travel.
Last year we went to Florida , but I did not. Know if it was safe to bring on a plane , after seeing how they through things around. It would be nice to know of sites that are MD
Friendly.
Google Luck

Mud! Didn't know you were such a wordsmith. Great poem!

And Ricki7, back about 30 years, my bride and I went to the Canadian side of Niagra Falls and took a hike down to the river from a park there. Boulders huge as houses, and the river was a roaring. What a great place! Is that where you're doing some hunting?

Togamac, never did any hunting there We use to hike to Devils Hole on the American side . I'm from town of Evans about 30 mi south of Buffalo and hunt local mostly woods .
I had a Old MD and never got out much , retired now so have more time and a AT Pro. MD hunting has me hunting the local history and realizing how little I knew about my area.
We like hiking and now take the AT along makes a great combination hobby.

I think you've got the pic posting down. I also think you have some cool places to hunt, if these pics are from there? Is that first stone thing part of a house, lodge or cabin? Looks neat as hell.

Resizing lost a lot of detail , my cabin is the first , the old house ( 1900's )is about a 10 min hike up hill from me. There is about 7 celler holes on a abandoned road across from me.
All are in Salamanca NY. The first chimney I s in N. Collins NY on now owned county property. The foot print of the cabin is small with the fireplace taking the whole side. It sits looking down a steep ravine and level old forest out back.. It may have been a Quaker cabin as they were the first to arrive in that area, or just a old hunting cabin? The only other thing I could find was a stone well but it is on the other side of the revine..I found one wheat and one modern penny there. The other spot is near Lake Erie , Evans NY, the home had 3 chimneys , a poured foundation , a cistern , a big garage poured foundation , and was redish stucco , it must have been first class for the time. Zillow shows a home from 1860 near that spot. I did find a 1902 well worn quarter there.
Very close by is the site of a old camp I found a lot of wheats and 3 silvers , the camp had cabins with and without cellars . They all had wells and the two had gas , I only found one septic tank near the celler . All the coins were near the celler hole with septic and gas , which makes me believe it was the shower and Rec area part of the camp. There was a YWCA across the highway next to the lake . ( closed in the 70's ).
The last two days before the snow was perfect for hunting and I had just found out my mother in law found a 1895 indian penny this spring in her garden. I changed my plans from Salamanca to her home built in 1955 , next to a 40 acre farm built in 1900 , now vacant , I have permission to hunt. They never thought much about finding the penny which is in great shape, sort of greyish ( from the fertilizer ? ) . Could it get any better ? Yes !! They live 5 min from me in Brant NY, it keeps getting better yet. , the soil is high sand mix, almost like digging at the beach. Ok , just 1 , 1945 quarter and a few wheats and trash . Well maybe next year.
