IMO, while the 5.3 gives you very good separation, the 4X6 DD is the absolute best for trashy areas. It will cut your search time in easily in half. Yes, you lose a little depth but anything bigger isn't going to see through all that junk anyway. Save your sanity and get the 4X6

I started out with the 4x6 but I did not like the small size even though you could hunt really trashy areas. It is a good coil don't get me wrong but you are restricted to just trashy areas because of the size. I wanted something that not only would hunt the trashy areas, but would allow me to hunt away from the trashy areas, something with a bigger footprint. I looked at the 5.3 and the 4.5x7 DD Excelerator and chose the 4.5x7. This coil can work the trashy areas as well as the 4x6 IMHO, plus I could continue hunting in the not so trashy areas. I liked it so well that I bought one for my wife who was also using the 4x6. Since we began using the 4.5x7 we never use the 4x6 and believe me we work some trashy areas with great success. When Excellerator came out with their new 6" DD Excellerator I gave it a good workout and found it more to my liking and now I use it for hunting trashy and no so trashy areas. My wife will not take her 4.5x7 off her MXT for any reason. Decisions, decisions. Good luck with yours. HH Dennis in Idaho

After reading and responding to similar posts for months, I've come to the conclusion it depends somewhat on the personality. I know that sounds odd, but I love my 4X6 shooter for the trashy areas. I've used the 5.3 as well, but it doesn't slip thru the trash quite as well. Back to the personality, I don't mind slowing down and covering less ground with the shooter. Some THers just don't fit that mold and that's okay. While that usually means I do cover less ground, I cover it more carefully and that's not a bad thing. I haven't tried the 4.5X7 mentioned, but it seems close enough size wise that it should be excellent as well. If I didn't already have the 4X6 and the 5.3, I'd probably be looking at one seriously.

I have a 6"DD and it seems to act up in iron, not smooth like the 4x6 and the 4.5x7. I have all 3 coils. I am thinking there is somthing wrong with it.
