Hunted Out?:

Nancy-IL

Well-known member
Larry and I went on a road trip and came across this old house on a corner lot that was being restored. Boy did it look sweet! Larry walked up to the porch with card in hand to talk to the owner about detecing it. Needless to say, the owner said yes. :wiggle: Picture below and built in 1876. I had my MXT with the stock coil on, new batteries, relic mode and I was ready to go. He didn't even want anything that was found. Found? There wasn't anything found except for a few clad coins. Nothing deep whatsoever. Boy what a big disappointment. Hunted out? I would have to say, "Yes". After realizing it was a loss, we thanked the owner and moved on. We went to a few parks and I did manage to bring home the 1898 Indian Cent which was the oldest of any of our coins. Yes, I had the oldest!!!! Sorry Honey.:rofl: Just kidding.....:inlove:. I did find 4 Wheat cents, the Kennedy half, a Mexican coin and a handful of clad. We had a great time even though we didn't find much. Being able to detect together was priceless. Thanks for looking and HH to all, Nancy

I've been in areas "hunted out" and my new (2 months old) MXT found all kinds of coins etc, its hot on nickels. Love it.

We have too, but this place WAS hunted and hunted..................OUT! We're very thorough with our detecting. What a bummer! At least we added to our clad count for the year. HH, Nancy

Nancy,

What a sweet looking place to hunt that is. Others must have thought so too. I love those old houses. Lots of maintenance to keep them looking good, but they are certainly not in the "cookie cutter" mold of today's homes, and they look so majestic and grand. They sure knew how to build them well back then. Thanks for the pictures! Better luck next time.

Pete

Pete, You can say that again. When we were talking to the owner, I could see the enormous oak staircase and banister. It was beautiful! Glad to hear from you and hope your hunting days are filled with success! HH to all, Nancy

Hi Nancy,
If you and Larry were there then I believe it was hunted out. Larry never gives up. That is a very nice Indian. Rob

We couldn't believe there was NOTHING deep in the yard. I was going back and forth and overlapping my swings too. Guess I should have cleaned the Indian up more, but thank you. Glad to see you back on the forum and glad you made it home safe and sound! HH, Nancy

You both seem to hit a number of HD's, but what about the half dollars? This is the first that I can remember seeing on a post from you two. Do you hit them often, and not post, or, is this one of your firsts of many...

Congrats; still waiting on my 1st half...Hope it's a walking one!!!!!!

/Cliff

Hi Cliff, The "HD"..........does that mean half dollar? If so, the halves are hard to come by. But we've found a few in our day. It's been a while since I've found one. Seems like I found two silver halves last year. It goes in spurts. This one here isn't silver, but still nice to find. Now if you mean Indian heads, they come more often than the halves. Usually if I find them, I'll post them. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find your Walker. They sure are a pretty coin. HH, Nancy

Nice finds sound like a good time to spend together.Next time i buy something from yous i will have to look for Indian head penny in the packing:rofl:.Probably just another post card.Never found Indian head got one as change.Just got a 15" coil for my xlt looks like flying saucer my daughters were laughing at me.Have to pull mxt out for a spin but now it is suppose to rain next 3 days.Talk to you later

Well Fred, you might be surprised and find that Indian Head cent next time in your box. You'll find and Indian Head one of these days. Thanks and HH, Nancy

Some times my fingers type faster than my brain works.... HD was my typo for ID (Indian Head pennies). I note that you and Larry seem to pick-up a lot of those ID's almost as many as my zinc!!!! Haven't hit an ID yet; still trying, but I have to learn to do my research; something that I detest. Still just happy in collecting my clad, and silver now and then.

Was reading a post over on the BH Forum: "No such thing as a dollar" which made me stop and think just how hard it is to lose an old dollar or half at that due to the size. And how few of them are out there so it's good to see your Half come up. Keep the family pictures coming as it will ultimately make me move, and do the research that is necessary if I want to move onto bigger and brighter things!

Thanks/Cliff

So true, we find a lot more Indians than we do halves. They read a bit different when in the ground for some reason. I've had the Indians jump all over but usually in the 50's range and peek up to 74 on the VDI. But a solid beep. You'll find one, I know you will. The researching isn't very hard at all. Sometimes you just need to ask. :detecting:

As for the camping photos, we had a wonderful time as always. Steve & Pam, McLucky, Larry, General are all having a good time around the fire while I am playing with my camera. Come join us sometime. We always have the detectors with us. You never know when you might come across a big old house on a corner lot that is calling you and the owner is outside or an open sports field that just looks like it needs detected. HH, Nancy

Once upon a time in the mid eighties while walking down an alley using a 4900 coinmaster with "NO" meter, it gave off a loud sound of a large object in the ground, so I ignored it and continued on down the alley. After about two blocks my mind got the best of me and I went back and dug up that (what I thought to be a pop can) was really a cigar box full of ( about twenty or so and other change ) indian head pennies. I've never found another indian head penny since. I sold them way over the face value of what they were worth, mostly because I really didn't want to sale them, but they offered me more than what they were worth so I sold them.. Oh Well! Cliff

Nice try Nancy but you just never know. Some of our best finds are in so called hunted out spots.I just love it when some one says that site is hunted out.were doing a hunted out site now .2 British Silvers 1780s 4 US large onecent pennies 1820s tokens 1812 . those that say a site is hunted out won,t spend the time to really Detc. a site.Nice pics and good hunting .Pipes :detecting:

I know what you mean Pipes, but believe me, there was nothing in that yard where we were hunting. We took it nice and slow and still nothing deep. We have been to many places where it's been so called "hunted out" and came back winners. This sight was empty. We couldn't go in the back of the yard because of all the equipment and lumber, etc. We sure had fun trying to find that elusive coin, but guess it will be another day. HH, Nancy

Really cool story Cliff. Just goes to show..........you never know what's down there. HH, Nancy

Found my 1st IH today. Would like to say that I researched this place for 3 hours, and had to drive 25 miles, but alas, I would be telling a fib. Found it in a tot lot that I hunted numerous times before. Just sitting there on top of the wood chips just waiting for me to pick it up. It's a 1907, and needed no cleaning (not that I would have touched it up anyway). Came up as a 57 on the VDI scale.

Thanks/Cliff

WOW, that's fantastic Cliff. Just goes to show (again) that you never know what's in those tot lots. Just ask Larry! Congrats to you! HH, Nancy
