Hunted out Park .................

Elton

New member
I went to a small local park today for about 1 1/2 HRS ........ all my hunting friends says it's hunted out...

I went with a different attitude today thanks to a very good friend here on the Forum......

I have been aggravated lately at the lack of Silver........ or to be more precise, Low Silver finds.....

Fell into the trap of spending more, for detectors, and finding less.. LOL ...... Anyway , my buddy kicked me in ...... &*&^%...........and straightened out my attitude, reminding me in a way only he could, that the good old days of finding a pocket full of Silver is pretty much over.

He suggested I detect for the pleasure of detecting.........and try harder to find the Silver.Even said he made it a challenge...I guess I wasn't doing that..

I was just about ready to sell off the detectors, and quit detecting..... oh, I need to say after his "Lashing" I reevaluated and decided I didn't want to stop, and wanted to detect for the fun of it... Thank you my friend for the pep talk..it was, and is appreciated.... ( He reads this Forum) LOL

Nice digs !

Anytime I start getting frustrated I have to remind myself that this hobby is just that, a hobby. And I do it to get some excercise and to forget about the "daily grind", if only for a few hours. If it ever stops being fun I will just hang it up. Glad to hear you did'nt quit !

No place is hunted out. Not only do different detectors have different abilities, which will cause one to find something another may not tell you is worth digging, but people with even the same detector have different styles. How you sweep. How slow you go. Even what angle you hunt a spot can all make the difference. Not to mention the soil conditions from one day to the next. A friend and I just started hunting an old park that we've never really hunted before. I'm sure this place has been pounded by many machines over the years but it's producing silver and wheats for us like it's never been hunted hard, or at least with a good machine (or I should say the same machines we are using). Besides some silvers over 20 wheats have come from just this small area, ranging from 5 feet to say 50 feet away from the parking lot. This is a HUGE old park, so I'm sure it will take us years to cover all of it with "our" machines.

Don't just hunt a spot parallal or 90 degrees to an object such as a sidewalk or something. That's normal human behaviour. I like to hunt at an odd diagnal angle to those objects because that alone can unmask coins that won't hit from any other direction. Even the ones that will hit from those other directions but not the rest of the way around the target are mostly still sitting in the ground waiting for somebody to take a chance on and dig. I like those myself.

Just hasn't been happening for awhile.......... I got squared around again........... Just have to keep it real in todays hunting areas..

Nothing like a bunch of good finds to get the spirit up.

You have a very smart friend Elton, the days of silver hunting in public grounds is pretty much a thing of the past. There is still a lot of silver to be found in private property and researched long lost hot spots of yesteryear though, don't give up in that respect. I see a shift in hunting styles, moving from silver to gold as time goes by for those able to still dig a lot. In any given park, I think the amount of gold to be found far exceeds silver.......... and worth a lot more too. For those who hunt for the fun of hunting will get their rewards....

Like the idea of looking for that. Thanks

Found that next to one of the nickles that rang between tab and Zinc penny bouncing ID

I think we all need to just enjoy of hobby that we all love so much and be thankful that we can do it , silver or no silver it all good, best of luck Elton, Hank

Good for you Elton, and Good for your Friend! That's the kind of Friends we all need to have, and remember to always appreciate! Just being "able" to make a hunt is a blessing for many of us and in time will prove the same for many others. Being able to make that hunt, and especially when having some Good Digging Buddies with us will in time become the most enjoyable thing about digging and finding any goodies will just be exrra Blessings.HH, Charlie

Congrats E. You deserve it:) Alot of areas are technically 'not' hunted out, but let's say...not worth the effort (time/gas) for silver finds. Lately, I am focusing on small patches of ground in silver 'potential' pre-1964 areas that most/all detectorists would ignore. I mean maybe a few square feet in size, or a un-noticed/un-improved spot in a area thats been renovated. Still getting silver. Not tons of it, but 1 or more silvers per outing. I guess one would say..think 'out of the box'.

Elton, ya know ya can't/won't quit.....we will not let you....lol

Its amazing what a difference attitude makes. I get into the slumps also, go out and find nothing for several hunts.
You have a good friend Elton, I'm sure that if you haven't already, you will have the opportunity to return the favor.

I myself have learned to be more pleased with a Greene wheat or two as I found yesterday. The Chicago parks and preserves I hunt have been pounded for years by detectorist way more experienced than me. That's why I am sceptical about newbies with only a couple years in the hobby claiming 2,3,or even 400 silver a year who hunt these same spots. As DA coach would say who ya crap in!

Hi Elton, glad to hear you decided to stay with us....I guess most of us go through a slump once in a while..One of the things I do is pick up a detector I haven't used for a while, and go through the process of re-acquainting myself with it...did that with my Cibola in April and had a ball...but no silver until I decided that a little visual ID would be another refreshing change...Viola!!! a small silver ring, courtesy of the Gold Bug Pro. For me, a change of machines helps me to keep my mind on the job and keeps the interest levels up. May not work for everyone. Great to hear that you're back in positive mode:). Concentration on the job at hand is so important with detecting, and often other peoples' negative attitudes to "hunted out" areas are just that...negative attitudes. Good luck. Pete
