Hunted out park , Machine kicks butt

How many times have you read this. Yes i am guilty also, i am sure.:nopity:
Just read of a hunter pulling a hand full of coins 2 - 8 inches deep were he hunted the day before.
Or the Fifty Cent piece down 4 inches . I am sure these are true and can be unmasked and what not.

But to be a true comparison , Two or more machines should be tested the same day if possible , with similar coils and same approach angle.
Power only one machine at a time and trying as many settings as possible.
That might prove that machine A was the best on that target. Then its time to move on to the next.:beers:

You've hit a subject that I think about from time to time. Often, I've read a post where detector XZ finds super goodie implying that other detectors might not have found it when in reality, any reasonably able machine would have done as well, if it had passed over the target. I think the best comparison tests between machines occurs when hunter A detects a signal, then calls over hunter B who is using a different detector to see if his detector will hit it also and as solid or not. And that's just a start. Seems to me a fair bit of testing like this involving different conditions, targets, masking, and soils should be done before deciding if one detector has a definite edge over another. I'm sure that often it would show that both are fairly equal, but each is stronger in one area than the other. JMHO.

My partner and I often check signals between machines before we dig. And we hunt some places that have been hit pretty hard. I find that there are some differences but not as huge as some might like to claim. We have seen the biggest differences when soil conditions are bad for detecting.

Even with the same machine and different moisture levels in the soil I made a find in a spot I had detected several times myself and my partner many more. The only difference was recent rains had left the soil damp and I hit this down among a lot of scrap iron.

Now we both knew we had hit this very spot several times with at least three different machines before in dry conditions. But the wet day payed off. In the same hole we also hit this:

and this:

and all of this:

all in one big and deep hole with tons of iron trash in it. So when the park is hunted out, I don't buy it. With the same machine just a change in moisture content of the soil was the difference in making finds.

Here's the hole:

after each find we reswept and found another target and on and on.

Wow! That was quite a hole!! And quite a mix of finds.

Do you think it was part of an old trash dump or outdoor privy?

Had all the look of an old trash hole. A lot of broken iron and various "trash" stuff has been found in the general area and it's not far from an 1800's house that was torn down.

I recheck my hunted areas after a descent rain,it will show up stuff that you missed before . I foud two gold rings that way.in one day.And I had pounded that area to death, the differencecwas a fresh soaking from rain .Get some moisture in the ground makes a big difference in what you will find.

Glad to see this thread grow some legs . I like to try different machines. Last year i picked up a mid level machine and brought it to a test site.
A church stood here years ago and now loaded with iron. The site is small and had produced old coins in the past but in the last 3 or 4 trips
with 2 or 3 hunters with different machines ,no old coins.
The machine i had was said to be good in iron. In two short trips i pulled 4 Indian Heads Cents out and was impressed .
The ground was very dry and helped to shrink the iron halo in the ground
Not doing a side by side test i cant say if another machine would hit them or not.

And even that test has some qualifications....specifically, have you noticed that if you lay your detector down to your side while you're digging a target, you will often get a hit when you get up directly - or nearly so - under when the coil was resting while you were digging the previous target? It happens much to often to be just a chance. I'm pretty certain that the energy transmitted into the soil while the detector is laying there has excited the metal in the second target, making it more responsive than it would have been otherwise. I have no proof, but experience says there is something to this. Anyone else noticed similar event?
