Hunt with the CZ 6a

Flintstone

Well-known member
Hi All CZ hunters, What i need to know is what is the depth that a CZ6a can get on a dime in mild dirt? I have the 8" coil, I was told that it could be turned into a CZ3D. Would a CZ3D get more depth or just older nickles? Thanks for any replies, Dean

Flintstone, My CZ5 has hit dimes at 10 inches before in my mild dirt, so I would guess your CZ6a should do the same as all CZ's seem to be about equal on depth. This can vary from unit to unit of course, but on average they are all about the same.
Not sure about converting the CZ6a to a CZ3D, but I do know it can be done on a CZ5. All CZ's are nickel killers.... one of the best out there. Basically a CZ3D has a fourth tone added for relics which covers the square tab range. This is where lots of odd ball coins fall like flying eagle pennies, 3 cent nickels,
and the old fatty indian head pennies. It will boost them up to high coin tone which would be nice. I don't own a CZ3D and if I'm wrong about any information I gave you, someone please correct me. Personally, I would keep the CZ6a like it is and invest in a CZ3D if you think it might work better for you.
If you can convert your CZ6a to a CZ3D it will cost a tad over 200.00 to do so. I checked about doing it to my CZ5 and decided not to. Hope this helps you....HH...

Hi Roger, Yes it is a little over $200.00 to change to CZ3D. I am like you, I think i will leave it the CZ6A. I have never hit any coins over 5"or6" deep, but that could be because i have not run over any. I just was tying to find how deep this detector would go, if i go over any. I wounder what it would cost to get a tuneup on it? Have you checked on that? The CZ6A is in very good condition, not all beat up. I was thinking about getting a 10.5" coil for it, that might make it go deeper. Thanks for the reply. Flintstone

Flint....converting your 6a to a 3D will not make it gain any depth. The conversion would mainly bring some mid tone conductors like V nickels, certain IH pennies, possibly a gold coin, into the high tone hits. It will also not make it a 4 tone detector.

I have been running 6a's since they first come out, and the 2 I have can easily hit a dime at 10 inches plus, with the 8 inch coil. I hardly ever use any other coil on the unit, whether beach or land hunting. The only time I may change coils is if the beach is sanded in, where I then put on the 10.5 inch or Sunray 12 inch, or when going into a trashy park, where the 5 inch coil gets put on.

I would air test at dime at sensitivity 8-9, GB at 5, volume at 10, discrim 0 in normal mode. You should hit that dime with a crisp high tone, repeatable, at least in the 8-9 inch range. If not, First Texas MAY be able to help out in the depth dept. Not sure if Tom D can tune it for depth as well as convert to 3D specs....you may want to ask him.

When I asked Tom about a tune up on my CZ5 he said that analog detectors rarely need tuning. Mine is working fine but just thought it might be a good idea to have it checked out to make sure it is operating at its best.

CZ6A came out in late 92 or 93 and hasn't been made in years so theoretically you could have a unit with lots of years on it and a tuneup by Fisher may be in order as units may or may not lose their efficiency with age. As far as converting to a CZ3D is cost inefficient and wouldn't give you more depth just change the meter facet parameters to get the older coins especially the old nickles which come in lower than the Jefferson along with picking up more older coins in enhanced mode.Indeed any CZ properly tuned is capable of 10-12 inch silver dimes in the average mineralization that most of us hunt in..

I`v been useing the same cz6a since 1993 sent it to First Texas for a tune up they did i fine job and its hotter than ever , a dime 12" heck ya.love it

Would not recommend converting your CZ-6A to a CZ-3D The CZ-6A will get a dime at 9 to 10 inch's easy. I once found a seated dime at 10" and the coin was on edge. I called my son over to prove it with out removing it from the ground. I have seen it pull a Seated Quarter out at 11". A few years back I was hunting a park and I got a coin reading that was bottomed out on the depth meter. It turned out to be a walking Liberty Half at over 12" and it was loud a clear.

I guess the best way to put this is if you already have the best, don't mess with it. Rick IL.
