Hunt with Dave and Bob gave us all some goodies. Some mexican silver...a large cent...and more.:super:

Met up with forum member bday again and he was kind enough to invite my hunting buddy Dave and Hercules along.

We thought we would pound Bob's old site he researched one more time...in hopes of squeaking out another keeper.

Well the only things I squeaked out were another 5 deep "screwcap" injuns. You know what I'm talking about...the deep whining injun hits that end up being screwcaps at about 9".:veryangry:

Bob decided he would get creative on us and hunt the little "jungle" strip of the area. It was the only place that had not had any of our coils run over it. I got close but did not feel like fighting through the briars and poison everywhere.

Bob however...he did not care and was like a man possesed once he got a sweet hit.:punch:

He was on all fours...fighting the briars...poison...and digging targets with the help of Herky.:) He found a solid carpet layer of screwcaps...probably because this is where all the winos chucked there bottle when they were finished.

He was rewarded for all his hard work though because once he removed a ton of crap and got to a different layer underneath...he popped out a sweet old large cent.:clapping:

Here are the pics after he gave it a thorough soaking and cleaning.

Afdter a few hours...Dave and I headed back towards home because he had spent some time locating a site and getting permission a few days earlier.

It was an old schoolhouse site and the foundation was long gone...but bits of an old sidewalk were still there...so that's where we began our search.

The very first thing I dug was a sweet old sterling silver wedding band at about 9"...so I was hoping we were in for a good afternoon.

We definitely were because over the next few hours Dave and I dug plenty of keepers.

We each got a few silver...some injuns'...some wheaties...some trinkets...and a ring.

The one little silver is a mexican coin...a 10 centavo from 1894. This is my second one of these coins I've found over the years.

I used the SE and Sunray X-12 coil and ended up with the mexican silver coin...2 more barbers...2 injuns'...some wheaties...my 2nd Brunswick-Balke token...and the silver ring.

I think 3 of my last 6 barber dimes have been 1910...but one of these 2 is very nice.

Dave was working the SE and 10 x 12 SEF combo and he did very well too...getting the barber dime...2 injuns...2 other silver... some wheaties....and the sterling bracelet piece.

Good results on those hunts Bryce.....it is fun to hunt
with good friends...especially when everyone can find
some keepers to take home. Was Herc any help with
the diggin? Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

firm believer in 'payin dues' and like for Bob, it has indeed paid off for me more than once.
What did he use to clean that LC ?

Jim,
I soaked it in hot peroxide and actually forgot about it and it stayed in for about 10 minutes. I usually only leave them in for a couple of minutes. It came out more shiny than I would have liked.
Bob

I jist dug 5 o' them ladies, i'm gonna try on in the peroxide.

Nice going there Bryce, Bob and Dave.:clapping: That is one sweet LC and in very, very nice condition. Bob has got some biggens to detect in that area, but it certainly paid off for him. Maybe you should teach Herky to do the digging for you. Nice post and GL & HH on your next outing.

Eddie

Nice finds! The LC is very nice and clear. I like the silver band too. The Mexican 10 centavos is cool - we find Canadian silver here in Ohio but never Mexican-wonder how it got there? What's the name on the Brunswick-Balke token? It might be attributable. Glad to see everyone found some keepers. HH

Jim.... post some pictures of the before and after as you clean those large cents. I just demonstrated the use of my tumbler at our club meeting for those who hadnt used one. That followed last months demonstration of various methods for cleaning and even toning copper coins. That coin came out very nice. Our point was to use the least evasive method you can to get the condition you want. Nice finds guys.

Nice hunt you all had bud. I am curious as to the place the Brunswick token is from too. Is there a store or manufacturer on the other side? Is it a 1 cent token...2 cent or 5 cent?

Mighty shady group of feller's to be hanging out with. Especially that one with the wet nose and the collar.

Two thumbs up for Bob getting down and dirty and coming up with the LC

Some places need the trash thinned out a little before you start finding the good stuff.

Imagine the old schoolhouse will be on the To Do list for a while.

Thanks.

Rich

Bob It was nice to meet you and I had a lot of fun hunting with you. Thank you for inviting me and I hope we can hunt again sometime.
Way to go on finding a large cent.

Bryce it's always fun to hunt with a friend or in this case...friends. Let's hit the school site again soon buddy.:beers:

the rest of you fellers' who responded...Thanks for checkin' out our post.

Gold Nuggets....I do believe Herky did in fact help Bob sniff out the large cent:bouncy:

Token Digger...the other side of the Brunswick token says Good for 2 1/2 cents in trade N & D

Eddie.... I don't mind cold temps, hot temps, rain, mud. dry dirt, gravel, frozen ground etc....but no way I was gonna' mess around in the briars, poison, weeds, broken glass, etc:. That's not how I roll. :clapping:

Rich...Dave and I will definitely be giving his site another hammering. He has really gotten hooked on this hobby since I got him started about 4 months ago.

Hey Bryce-

I didn't have any luck attributing your token. These are always tough when they are just initials. I can tell you that JM Brunswick tokens date to 1872 and earlier, JM Brunswick & Balke Co. date to around 1874-1884 and Bruswick, Balke, Collender tokens start around 1884 (I'm not sure when they stopped with the tokens - probably 1890s or so but they didn't change their name to Brunswick Corp. until 1960). These tokens were ordered by pool and billiard halls, saloons, cigar stores, bowling alleys, cafes and fraternal organizations, although saloons and billiard halls were the major users. If you have time, you may want to look at the city directories in the town you found the token or contact the local historical society. It's a neat find and full of history. HH
