hunt smart...not stupid from Athens, Ohio

RESEARCH, RESEARCH AND MORE RESEARCH ! ! A LOT OF US ,INCLUDING MYSELF, HAVE A BAD HABIT OF NEVER HITTING "NEW" PLACES. YOUR LOCAL FAIRGROUNDS OR LOCAL SCHOOL S ARE A GOOD SOURCE . A LITTLE RESEARCH THOUGH MAKES A MAJOR DIFFERENCE . RECENTLY I FOUND A LOCAL HISTORY BOOK THAT SHOWS 140+ SCHOOLS FROM 1704 THRU THE 1950 S . THE SAME FOR CHURCHES, REST AREAS, GENERAL STORES, ,, EVEN WISKEY STILLS!!! TO TOP IT OFF... DETAILED MAPS OF EACH TOWNSHIP IN OUR COUNTY. I ALWAYS LOOKED FOR LOCAL HISTORY ON THE SHELVES IN THE LIBRARY. A LIBRARIAN MADE ME AWARE THE THEY KEPT THESE BEHIND THE COUNTER AND WERE NOT ALLOWED TO BE CHECKED OUT . USED A COPY MACHINE , SPENT ABOUT $7.00 AND WALKED OUT WITH HUNDREDS&HUNDREDS OF VIRGIN SITES. GO TO YOUR LIBRARY AND "DIG" . GOOD HUNTING!!!

Good Idea!

I've got some library books due back today and will take your advice on looking for local history books.
Thanks

P.S. Posting in all caps is considered "SHOUTING" by some!!! I'm not mad, just a friendly reminder.

Other than that, very good post.

By the way, I'm originally from Minford, just out from Portsmouth, Ohio. Good area!

Interesting post.
Using lower case lettering is easier on the eyes.!

There are lots of map sites online where you can get old maps of your area. In the Northeast area, you can find the old "Beers" maps which have lots of detail of how the area looked over 100 years ago. They are very useful and give lots of new areas to hunt.

I have checked out as many as there are of our county and I will say it will open your eyes as to what used to be where. Here in Fl where I live not 15 minutes from my house they used to have a large hemp farm! It was for ship ropes. I have also checked some of the supposed locations of certyain sites mentioned in some of the books and found what is left of some of the sites. It does pay off.
