Been a while since I said "Hi" I'm sitting down to a bowl of fresh vennie chile and wanted to see how you all are doing. I've been preparing for final exams and trying to get a little meat in the freezer. Before Thanksgiving I hunted 2 days and harvested a spike. I wanted the doe he was with but he was coming right toward me and i couldn't pass up a 40yd shot wih the rifle. After butchering him and packaging the meat, I still had Sunday to detect. Donnie and I hunted more of the woods we love so much. We weren't finding many coins, just a lot of ox shoes which are always a good sign that old coins o buttons are close by. I found a cache of sardine cans near an old road bordered by coal pits. So I nknew we were in the right area. After a few hours with no coins or buttons, we deided to see who ould find the most oxen shoes. I won in that category with 5 and Donnie found 3. Donnie beat me in the coin category though. I always tell him he should try dowsing, he has a knack for knowing just where to look in the middle of nowhere, just like he is pulled to that spot. Well one of the coal rings which never produced much of anything for us pulled him to the spot and he yells, "You know how we were just talking about all the shield nickles found in this area, well I think I got another."
After closer inspection he says are the 2 cent pieces bigger than a nickle? I rplied yes and he said check this out. He found a beautiful 1864 mall motto 2 cent piece. After cleaning it, I would have to say it was at least VF quality and maybe AU-50. the nice guy that he is, he even let me rescan the hole. I should have swept a little wider but I felt a little cheap since he had made the discovery. not far from the hole he pulled out an 1863 Ih in the same shape. This day was getting better and better. i pulled out a button 20 yds. away and then a neat eagle button with shield.(If anyone can identify it I'd appreciate the help) It looks more like a griffin with head facing left and shield on the right side with an anchor on it) Well hope you all have been well and I'll be checking in this weekend as much as Ican. have a good one.
