Howdy! New member..2day. TIPS would be great.

PIONEER202^WI^

Hey freinds!... Any tips would be great. I use a BH Pioneer 202..not the best detector. I've not yet figured completly figured out the best settings yet. Tried everything..n went by the manual too... All I find is mostly newer pennies..and some wheats. Idk what I'm doing wrong if anything..I just try dif setting. Im not sure on how to use the sensitivity..and or where to set the best setting at for coin-shooting. Anyone know the 202 well enough? Im not new to the hobby..just new to owning my own detector. I know that finding trash/junk is all part of detecting..but this 202..seems to find sooo much junk more than anything..cans, tabs..scrap metal etc. Anyone know the proper settings to target out most of that..? THANKS...

Hi PIONEER202^WI^:

For starters, keep your SENS at about 10'oclock...Keep the DISC/NOTCH knob all the way CCW and hunt in the DISC mode. Dig EVERYTHING that gives a repeatable signal...Keep your sweeps level to the ground, and keep the coil about 1" off the deck...Do not wear steel toe boots/shoes. take off watches and rings...keep coil away from your shoe/boot eyelets if they are metal...If machine gives false signals, check your swing...Is it level (no raising the coil at end of swings (should not say swing...You move the coil in an arc in front of you)), turn down SENS a little at a time until false signals stop. Also, you may try slowing down your swing to improve signal quality.

Happy Hunting,

ok.... slow down a bit, pioneer 202. i can tell your're new at this. as a proud [and very productive] owner of a bh pioneer 202, as well as 5 other machines, and a longtime hunter to boot, it sounds like your're being a bit impatient. a metal detector is not a magical muse that sings coins from the ground. just the fact that your're pulling wheats from the ground is good. metal detecting isn't for everybody; an extra helping of patience and persistence from the good lord is essential in this hobby. you must out-think and accurately read this machine at every turn, for it looks to fool you at every turn. it's what you read in between and decide to dig in between the beeps is what really matters. that alone can make the difference between a good day and a bad day. in my eyes, there's nothing bad you can say about the bh pioneer 202... i sure enough have found a boatload of THE GOOD STUFF with it. and i have many pic posts to prove it by... just look back. all you gotta do. i also own a tesoro [a true ground killer] and a nautilus lf [better pull your tooth fillings out before you use it] but sometimes, for good ol' fashioned let's-get-it-on-and-find-the-deep-old-stuff, i will pull the ol' girl out the closet and invariably have a good day! take the time to learn the machine first. be the result what it may, good luck, and hh,

WOW, WELL SAID GRAY GHOST.
IT GETS A HOLE LOT BETTER PIONEER EVERY TIME YOU GO OUT TO HUNT TAKE THE BAD WITH THE GOOD

I'd have to agree with Gray Ghost. I also own a BH 202 and it is a great machine. It's not that hard to learn it just takes time and patience to understand what it is telling you. When I purchased my Time Ranger I thought I would sell my 202, but the truth is I can't part with it. For almost 5 years we found a lot of good stuff together. I can honestly say, I have never been skunked with the 202. I didn't find a couple of wheaties like you did first time out but I've never come home from a hunt without coinage. After a few times out I realized it wasn't the machine that was the problem it was the operator (that would be me). I even went so far as to give my 202 a nickname, I named it "George" for George Washington because it never told a lie. It will tell you when there's metal beneath the coil, all you have to do is understand what it's saying and set your machine so it finds more good stuff than junk. Here's one bit of advice you might try next time out. Set your machine according to Gray Ghost's suggestion. Then when you get a hit, touch auto notch and swing it over the target again, if you get a good solid hit that is consistent anywhere in the silver range, you've got something worth digging. Then as you become more in tune with your machine you will learn to discern the hits you are getting on both ends of the scale. The other option is like Ghost said, dig every target no matter what. After doing that for a while you will better understand a good target from junk. Just take your time and learn your machine. And everytime you go out, Enjoy the Hunt!

I just want to tell you, watch out what you ask for. I'm saying this cuz I'm new to and asked the same question.
Read to all of it and soak up as much info you can. These people really know what there doing.

Thanks alot for all the info...!!! Like I said, I AM NOT new to the hobby, I am just new to owning MY OWN detector finally...but the help is highly appreciated. Also, I didnt say that I found wheats on the first time out..believe me it took time to finally score those...so yes patience was the key. I just quick wrote a msg asking for help or tips and made it short, didnt mean to come on as an impatient detectorist. I found all the wheats on a mound of dirt that was made in a local park where they bulit a large restroom/concession dwelling on. So wherever that dirt had come from would have been a great spot, I'd imagine. However, I didnt try this spot until after they had done all the building and the crew moved out. Otherwise I would have found out where the dirt was from, ya know? Anyways, before all those wheats I found..I also found an 1837 token in a whole dif area. That was honestly my first find ever! I dug this from 4inches deep and when I did some research I discovered that what I had found was an 1837 U.S "Hard-Times" token. I found this near almost in the corner where some railroad tracks and a sidewalk meet. I had dug and found nothing in the whole and went over my pulled dirt and got no beeps so I started filling my hole when I spotted the token.(about the size of a half dollar). I'll get some pics up. Thanks again 4 the help.

hey pioneer 202, good clarification. i could tell your post was a bit hurried, and mistook it for impatience. but it's all good, welcome to a great site! i wish i could find a hard times token; they've eluded me so far. and i'm sure the minute you make a pic post of it, we will all want to see it! hh,
