How Would You Ground Balance A Silver uMax?

First, you would void your warranty-you have to replace the terminal w/3 wires with a ground pot-and you have to order it from a special place that has pots that small. Then, after you placed it in an all metal mode that's not a TRUE a/m mode you would raise and lower your coil until you had no change in your sound. Or you could use as is and just slow down the coil speed when in highly mineralized areas. I once found a wheatie under a much searched set of swings in an area that looked like iron ore city. I got a "tick" sound and I slowed the coil down to a snail's pace and the signal came in clear-at 3". By controlling your sweep speed according to the area you're in you can get good results. If the signals are shorter in duration than usual-you're probably in heavy mineralization.

the detector crapped out.......I have no idea why. I used it for about 6 hours.......put it away in my closet....took it out on my vacation and it just gave a constant tone. If I had modified it I'd be S.O.L.

I'd have 1 $240 unusable detector.

I sent it to Tesoro.

I didn't do it, because 1: its a new detector and 2: the detector was working great as is.

my 2 cents.

There are a few folks around that make this kind of modification, but of course as mentioned, it usually voids the warranty. My solution to the problem was to purchase a clean, used Eldorado which has the manual ground balance from the factory for areas that my SSumax wouldn't handle well. Remember, anything worth having is worth having two of.

by the user name "Monte"sent me instructions on how to ajust the pots inside an original Silver Sabre. I can't locate those instructions now.

His plans didn't call for any warrenty voiding as I recall. Nothing physical was changed in anyway.

The point was to ground balance the Silver to work at a certain location.

Anyway, thanks again!

Hay Badger it seems that no one answered your question
about ground ballancing a Silver uMax.

One proplen is that the Silver uMax has only a motion
discrimonation mode.

That makes it harder to ground ballance. You have to do
what Monte calls " Power Balancing ".

This is done by accessing the GB pot in the Silver. If you
can not do that, then you may have trouble. It gets harder.

Here's the procedure to power balance any detector.

The Silver remains in the Disc. mode, so the first
paragraph dosen't mean much. On the Silver uMax
just set the Disc. to the minimume. On others, read
the first paragraph.

To Power Balance a metal detector, you should make sure the GB control controls the Disc. mode. This is true of most Tesoro's, for example, except the Lobo SuperTRAQ, Cort

if you search on the mods forum there was someone who posted a pic of which pot does the GB on a couple of tesoros. if you cant locate it, you can probably post a message and someone will put it up again for you. I might like to see it myself for the cibola I have.

My understanding is that the Silver umax only has a threshold pot. I am unable to find the post at this moment, but there are three wires,to the best of my memory, of a fixed g/b. There must be a pot added-and there's not much room-so a special pot has to be ordered=and you will be dealing with small components. Where is Monte when I need him?:please:

[size=large]you need to do the 'Power Balancing' in the toggled All Metal mode as this is still a motion Disc. mode, but with minimal rejection.

I had to Power Balance the last Conquistador

Just for the Record: I opened my Silver umax and there's not a POT anywhere! If so, I will have to get my magnifying glass to see it! The posts on other forums only refer to similar Tesoro detectors-thinking they may be the same. At least in my Silver, everything seems to be preset on the board.:goodnight:

You guys MUST be talking about the SS micromax, NOT the Silver umax. There was NO trimmer in mine for ground balance. Please clarify or help me to understand!:sadwalk:
