How to tell the size/shape of a target by pinpointing?

What are the techniques everyone uses to determine the targets shape/size. Which pinpoint mode do you use? Is there a better way to decided if your item is a coin?

The only time I use pinpoint to determine the size and shape is if I'm getting a large area that it's pinpointing, then I know it's a buried can. I go by the numbers on the screen to tell what kind of coin it is.

Gate21, I have only used the pinpointer to size an object that was iron. (Relic hunting, shell frags, horseshoes, etc..) I use the sizing option. I just do not see how pinpoint will help you out on an object as small as a coin.
