It may not be clear that the first sweeps in pinpoint are to locate the hot strip of the target. All we do is try to find the hottest return for a target. When we turn the coil at a right angle then use the point just in front of where the rod connects to the coil to sweep down the the hot area we have stored in our brain for the first sweeps. That is how we keep the target from being way off. If we don't use a specific point of the coil for our right angle sweep then the target can still be anywhere in the hot strip region.
