How to PIck Coins from all that IRON

Threshold tone and max limit both affect how high the maximum tone is that is sounded. As an example if the threshold tone is set to low (0) with the max limit set to 8 you will hear a tone for a silver quarter that is very high. If the threshold tone only is increased to 10 the detector will now have a extremely high almost shrill pitch for a silver quarter. If the max limit is increased to 10 with the threshold tone at 10 we now have a very extremely high very shrill tone for a silver quarter. Use a quarter and piece of iron about the size of a half dollar to set the pitch of the tone you like.
The bottom line is the max limit and variability adjustments interact with threshold tone. By adjusting threshold tone and max limit on a quarter we have the highest tone we want to hear.
If want to see an eye opener take a quarter and a piece of iron about the size of a half dollar and lay the two on the ground touching. Sweep the coil slowly back and for across the two targets. You should be able to clearly hear the iron hit and then the silver in one direction and then the silver and the iron hit in the other. If you cannot then after you have set the tones to you preference on the quarter and then the iron separated then do this.
Select FERROUS sounds, DEEP and FAST ON, Sounds to Normal, and IRON MASK TO -16 and slowly sweep the coil over the two targets once again with the quarter and iron touching. You will notice that you can pick the quarter out from the iron with ease. Sweep slow and you hear high

I have made many a copy of your posts although I don't reply to'em to often. but your efforts and info are appreciated by me. I work a lot, and seems like bad weather always hits when you're finally off, so this info is a great diversion to get ready for when I can really get out some. I recently got a explorer, so reading all this info can be overwhelming, but at the same time I don't believe you can ever know "too much". I'm thankful to all the posters and question answerers on these boards willing to help out the folks who have interest in this hobby.

Good to see your post and jump in anytime. There are a lot of users here as you know that are glad to help.

Perhaps Cody gets a bit technical at times , but I read everyone of his posts and see he is toning down his posts a bit so us non technical fellows can grasp what he is saying. Actually wish we had more posters and less listeners as throwing around these aspects can only help..Heck been detecting for years and pick up a pointer now and then as indeed we can never learn enough.Again an Explorer is only as easy or hard as you want it to be, go slow and don't get fancy and all will fall into place...In addendum read every post with a grain of salt as conditions differ greatly from state to state and you want something that works in your area.

Dan, I very much appreciate your post and input. You are right in that I want to keep the technical toned down. After so many years working and teaching in electronics it is as natural for me to talk techie as it is english. I think after 46 years in a work area we get to the place were we see life in terms of our work careers. Most of the time I don't really realize I am doing so unless it is pointed out.
I agree very much about more posts and am hoping that more will do so and I get to listen more. I have no desire to do all the talking and that was one reason why I discontinued my own forum that had a membership of about a hundred.
I have been asked to host a technical forum a couple of times but don't want that responsibility in these retirement years and enjoy just being a contributor to the forums. I want to know where I am wrong and also gain from the input of others. I don't want to just enforce my own thiking and in particular where I have missed the boat so spend years thinking I was correct in my understading of a topic. I have said many time that one should consider all my posts as having a big question mark after them which is "what do you think about this".
Have a great day,
HH, Cody

I have never owned a DETECTOR in my LIFE!!!
Always wanted one...So..I did my research and almost bought a QUATTRO...BUT I WENT WITH THE EXPLORER 2..
Purchased it 3 weeks ago! I have been outside one time with it for maybe 30 minutes, because of the WEATHER! But I have read the Manual (4 times), watched the Video (4 times), and READ MANY, MANY
hours on THIS FORUM!
Because of YOU GUYS, CODY, DAN-PA,and many others,
I am Learning my Machine, Quickly!!
I AM NOT Afraid or Intimidated by the Control or Screens! I turned the Detector on this morning, and
easily, understand, moved thru and adjusted all the
Menus and Buttons! I have stayed away from the ADVANCED Settings for, NOW!
IT IS AS HARD AS YOU MAKE IT!
THANKS GUYS...AND KEEP IT COMING...............

There is a lot of new information here for me. I may have to come back for more information after getting time to really study your post.

Yes, this one is long and involved but really works nice. It is interesting to see what happens if you set the iron mask to -15 instead of -16 but I thought I needed to let this one rest as users give it a try. I ran onto this by reading the Owners guide and working different setting at a very good site that is just loaded with iron.
Glenn, I am always working some setting or idea looking for the ones that work best for the site that is of interest.
HH, Cody
