How to Photograph and enlage a map?

I have several old maps that I typically use a good magnifying glass with. I want to photograph them and digitally store them. I want to obtain as much resolution as possible. I have played with shooting panoramas in the past and it increased the resolution considerably. Does anyone have a suggestions. I have a Canon 4D with all the various lens.

I feel you can get the best advise here, http://www.findmall.com/list.php?36
One forum down from the maps forum.
A thought also would be to scan,or find someone to scan them to digital format.
There are places that do large objects for a small price!
