How to NOT find a Barber Half ( LONG)

Well it's pretty cold up here in Wisconsin and the ground is just about froze so I thought I'd write a detecting story . 2 weeks ago I posted my first Barber half and First Barber Quarter picture on here . I've been detecting since I was 12and I am 44 now .. Started with a Bounty Hunter VLF-TR 840..in all my years of detecting, them dang barber halfs and quarters eluded me . I'd find Barber dimes.. seated coins...large cents .. and all kinds of goodies .. just NO BARBER HALFS or QUARTERS! . Here is a story on how to NOT get them ..

About six years ago I was detecting with my brother in law ( KEN ) at his parents house . This house is the site of the old Chicago Northwest railroad vacation resort from the 1880's . It is many acres on a lake in Upper Michigan ... We had found many good coins over the years in this yard... lots of Indians, and Merc dimes in particular and even a few standing liberty quarters ...Down by the lake was the remains out of a few cabins that were on the site years ago . Ken was excited as he called me over and showed me a stunning Barber half he had found next to the cabin foundations .. This was like the third time he had found a Barber Half while we were detecting together . Of coarse I was a little envious... lol ( just a little) ... But I knew my time would come sooner or later ... Anyhow this yard is HUGE.. and slopes down to the lake. Most coins were DEEP... about eight inches .. so digging was very TIRESOME in this HEAVY CLAY soil .

This particular day we had been out ALL day swinging away ..and I kept getting textbook HALF DOLLAR signals near the lakeshore .. After digging about six of these signals about a foot down... I would find crushed pop cans .. They must have put some fill in certain areas of this yard over the years ...making these old cans very deep . I proceeded detecting toward the house and BAMM .. another textbook HALF Dollar signal ... I go to pinpoint this signal and it has a very large area about the size of another crushed can ... " Ahhh .. I ain't gonna dig another dang pop can! " I tell myself ..and proceed to walk right on by it .. About an hour later , My Brother in Law yells up to me ... HEY TODD ... You'll NEVER GUESS what I found in ONE hole out in the middle of the yard !! " 2 Barber Quarters and a Barber Half , ALL in the same HOLE! " ..... Of coarse I am excited... and ask him where he found them ... He says " you'll never believe it ,, right up in the middle of the yard where you were detecting earlier ..." He didn't need to show me EXACTLY where this signal was , as I ALREADY KNEW ! Here I was sitting on three beautiful BARBER coins , and passed them up for being ANOTHER CRUSHED POP CAN ... So if you r new to detecting , Or even think you know what is in the ground almost all the time , like I do :) ... Sometimes you can be wrong ..lol .. It's gonna be a long winter .. I already got a few sites ready for the spring thaw ! Hope you fair weather detectorists keep posting pictures for us Northerners to read about this winter , makes the time go by faster !

That's a great story, though I bet you didn't enjoy going through it at the time! :)

I think about this often...how many times have I passed on digging something because something "wasn't right," and I unknowingly passed over a GREAT find...

Well.. we are RELATED :) ... and I turned him on to detecting about ten years ago ..He lives in eastern Wisconsin and we always set up a few hunts by him every year . I love his area .. old groves ..parks .. tons of houses and people from the mid 1800's .. Where I live it's all turn of the century and you r lucky to find an Indian . Also by me we have had tons of competition for the last 30 years .. Almost all the good PRIVATE areas have been pounded too .. By him we have found good finds even at the parks! I am new to Minelab this year... So it makes going back to some of my old sites a little more fun with a new machine .. So far I am still in a comparing mode between my Whites machines and my Explorer XS. Wish I had the bucks to buy a new Explorer ... but Ill wait a bit longer and keep testing my XS to the MAX! I have always envied this board because of the posts over the last ten years ... if you look at what people have been finding and continue to find over the years ... it's almost mind boggleing . I have made a few discoveries between the detectors that are worth noting .. but I need more time with my XS to give my full blown review .. Most of it boils down to the old Chevy Ford argument .. They are both top notch detectors ... and both take a little bit of tweaking to get them running awesome

Great story.........................It's great you have someone to hunt with. .................................................John

Don't feel too bad, I had a guy dig a thick heavy PLATINUM wedding band right on my sand scoop drag mark, I drug my scoop right across the thing gridding either side of it. Doh!

Great story... Stick with that XS & you'll swear by it...
New or old Exporer, YOU will end up finding what other guys missed!

That is what I love about my E-trac as it can pretty much tell you by numbers the difference between dime, quarter, and half. I dig all quarter and half signals no matter how shallow. This year alone I found two Barber quarters that were only 2'' deep! With my CZ-3D which I love for depth, I know I would have passed these up as being to loud and shallow. That is one reason I have 2 differnt machines. Don't get me wrong though I also dug my share of screw caps but that comes with it.

Todd, I think we've all been there at one time or another if we've ever hunting with other detectorists. Those who hunt by themselves usually don't find out what they missed because nobody is walking behind them.

For years I hunted the yards of old homes with a dear friend. We would each start off hunting 1/2 of the yard and when we finished, we would switch sides and clean up after each other. Very quickly our coverage improved as did our thoroughness and willingness to dig 'iffy" targets. It is a great way to learn, though a little painful at times when we see we left a goodie behind for the other.

that is one thing my whites machines do better is ID..I go by sound with my XS.. as the display is irradic at times..but when my xlt said 82.5... you pretty much knew you had a silver dime.. sounds like the new explorer addressed this issue..no big deal as u can tell deep silver on the XS as well.. One thing i still struggle with is pinpointing with the stock DD coil.. deeper targets r okay.. but man..the whites VCO pinpointing is a lot better and easier to use. I think the fact that it is a big DD coil doesnt help..but shallow targets seem to move three inches apart depending on how I pimpoint. Im getting better at it , but it could be a lot better.
