How to make my 9'' search coil go deeper :yo:

I have a DFX Spectum and I have only ever been able to find things no deeper than 4 inches and I have been told that my 9 inch search coil should go little deeper than that.. can anyone Please help me out on what I need to do to my DFX... THANKS!!!:detecting:

I didn't want to buy a brand new detecter haha... I was thinking of getting the super 12 search coil... but I was going to make sure and see if I can make me 9 inch search deeper....

Have you tried Larry's program on the DFX forum? That is a very hot program and a little too hot for some users, but that is the program I used for 10 years and 8-9 inch targets were not a problem for me. Your ground may be different but that would be good because my ground in Central IL is VERY mineralized. And no, a MXT will not go deeper than a properly set up DFX. My Nancy (Moderator MXT forum) is tough competition with her MXT, but she does not have the depth advantage on copper and silver targets. In addition to the program, I used an EXcelerator 10"DD coil which gave me a little more depth in mineralized ground over the concentric 950. BTW, I am getting ready to list that same coil on the classifieds as soon as I get the picture taken. $100 will buy it.

o ok cool... Will Larrys program work good with my 9 inch search coil? and what if I get the super 12 will Larrys program work with it to?... Thanks for all the help

I tend to shy away from too big of a coil, don't get me wrong, in the right ground, the Super 12 works great, but it should be used in a pretty much trash free ground or you will get a lot masking. That is why I use nothing but DD style coils. Also larger conical coils tend to work best in medium or low mineralized ground. Yes, the 950 and super 12 should work, but you might have to reduce the gain down to 3.

Unless it's faulty, your 9" coil should definitely go deeper than 4". If you can, borrow another coil or try yours on a friends machine to see what happens. Your machine potentially could have a problem instead so you need to determine where the problem actually is. I'd expect depths of 8" to 10" at least even with the factory presets. My two cents.

Im pretty sure there is nothing wrong with it it just that I dont have it adjusted the right way... Im going to try the Larry Program on it and see if that helps me go deeper and see if im happy with that...Larry what do you mean by DD search coils do they sell them on the Whites web site? and I was wanting to ask you and Barber what ya'll know about the Eclipse Deepscan 1400 search coil is that a DD?... thanks so much for both of your help... Me and my dad have been decteting for 5 years now off and on and we go to all the schools around here and we have found over 350 dollars worth of coins on playgrounds and thats just with the factory settings nothing over 4 inches haha just think what we could have been find with the right settings huh haha... thanks again!!!:yo:

Perfect solution would be to spend a few days hunting with an experienced DFX user or to borrow another DFX coil to try...I hunted with a DFX user for several years and it seemed every time we changed sites he had to play with the facets to get depth but easily pulled 8 inch silver dimes once he set it up correctly..Matter of fact he actually always carried an old wheat penny with him to set the unit up. I could personally probably set up an XLT with my eyes closed but never used a DFX although many do well with them. Indeed buying a user friendly MXT might help. Whites makes excellent units with excellent ID, notching, audio etc. etc. but unfortunately
can not match the depth of several major manufacturers...In addendum several fine books available on depth and stability(DFX) available at your Whites dealer and no secret settings, just ones that work in your area...Whoops forgot one thing a Whites requires a faster swing which equates to more depth...

If you are using the factory settings, that is your problem. The factory programs are very lame and is set up to work for everyone, everywhere the first time out. If you would just up the preamp to 3, you will see much improvement and even go up to 4 if you can without having too much noise. I'm sure you can work with my program, (Larry's) but it is very hot and not for everyone, you may have to adjust it somewhat to fit your ground. The high AC and Gain in Correlate mode along with the pretty open Discrimination pattern is the heart of the program. Someone on here has the drawings of the DD and concentric coils or you can go to Kellyco/accessories/coils and they have a good description of the differences. In short, the DD style coils "sees" less of the mineralized ground and trash at any one time, yet you still get good depth and coverage.

True within reason, it can also hurt you because you can pass over deep targets before the detector has time to analyze the target. A fast wiggle directly over a suspected deep target will help you determine if it is a good target or trash. If the target still sounds good with the wiggle, it is likely a good target, if it breaks up or sounds raspy, it is likely trash. A steady even swing keeping the coil flat on or just above the ground lasting about two seconds from side to side is what works best for me.

o ok man all this information is very helpful thanks for all the info you have gave me... What exactly does setting the DFX to a EEPROM DP-Silver since its AC is at 76 that should make the coil perform deeper right?.. and in your eyes is the super 12 are the Eclipse Deepscan 1400 DD search coil better cuz im about the buy one and i live in MS if that helps any...

Factory Deep Silver is a little hotter than some of the other factory programs but still not as hot as Larry's program. Again, unless you are hunting in open trash free ground, I would stay away from the larger coils. The 1400 is a heavy coil and has no better depth than the D2 or the EX 10" DD coil. The only advantage of the 1400 is that it is a DD coil.

When u say DD coil I really don't know what the difference between the DD and a regular coil ... and I know u have prolly told me somewhere in here but can u explain again please please :geek:

You can do some research yourself for a more detailed answer, but in it's simplest terms, the Conical coil covers the ground the size of the coil and tapers off the deeper it goes much like a cone shape. The DD and SEF type coils are designed so the active search area resembles a blade of sorts, often from the front of the coil to the rear but often only an inch wide greatly reducing the amount of ground being analyzed at one time. That design greatly increases the ability to separate trash from target and the detector does not have to deal with a lot of ground noise attributed with the conical coil. The conical coil does have it's place though especially in the mild to medium mineralized ground often giving you more depth under the right conditions.

By using the search feature above, a lot of your questions can be answered in much more detail than what I am giving you, sometimes entire threads are devoted to a question.

So the regular coils cover more ground and picks up more trash and the DDs target smaller areas but go a lil deeper and picks throght the trash... I'm starting to get it a lil better now... I'm goin to try a few programs first then Ill make a desicon weather to go with super 12 r a DD coil.. Thanks for all your help mr Larry

Love my Excelerator 10"DD! Larry is a great guy selling a great coil at a great price, snatch this up!!

After doing a little research I think I want to go with the 10" DD coil and didn't you say you had one for sale for 100 bucks?... How old is it?

I am putting it on the classifieds in just a few minutes and I will give you first chance to buy. I am guessing it is 3-4 years old?

It is on the Accessories Classifieds now.
