How to find locations to hunt

I have plenty of old towns near me and I have studied old maps. How do you go about asking a private property owner to hunt on their property? I have still not grown enough courage to do so. Do you offer them a piece of the rewards that you may find?

Hi,
Well that scraggly stick connecting shoulders to arse is called a spine.
If you got any, you just knock on the door, introduce yourself and ask them if you can metal detect on their property.
Should you have a spare detector it may help if you offer that the owner or his kids can "help" you doing so.
The worst that can happen is a NO for an answer - which doesn

I research the property and send them either a short letter or postcard. I introduce myself and give them a little personal information and my phone number and in about 90% of the time I get an okay. That breaks the ice and is better than just showing up and asking to metal detect. That works for me. It gives them time to think about it without feeling rushed. It just depends on what works for you.

Go ahead and ask! Who cares if they tell you to get lost? Or else just go and hunt whatever yard you want, and when the homeowner comes out wondering what the hell you think your doing, tell them to mind their own business! Tell them you work for the city and are on a carpenter ant patrol, or termites, or whatever you want to tell them..full disclosure, I'm too shy to talk to strangers, so I have to work around my disability and pick up pennies in totlots.:sadwalk:
