How to EASILY Remove the D2 Coil Cover

After reading all the horror stories about removing the D2 Coil Cover, I decided to remove mine for the first time to see what the fuss was all about. Well, after about an hour of trial and error and the coil cover not coming off, I understood completely. I set out to find and easy way, and I think I found it.

First, you need to purchase the D2 Coil Removal Tools (patent pending) shown in the photo. I happened to have two of these in my pocket and thought well what the heck. I used two (2) Dunlop 1.5 mm Purple Guitar Picks that you can find at almost any music store. The pick material is tough, but shouldn't harm the cover or the coil.

I'm not much of a narrator, and this is not the best video, but I think you can get the idea as described below:

With the D2 coil still on the detector and sitting near vertical, insert the first pick between the cover and the coil at or near the top. Now, you have to put some pressure on it while forcing it upwards as if you are going to pry the cover off with the pick. At this point, you hold pressure on the pick and then insert the other pick beside the first one and pry upward and slide the pick around the coil like using an old style can opener. When that side is loose, slide the first pick around the cover in the opposite direction. That's all their is to it. The entire process takes about 20 seconds or less.

This should work on other coil/cover combinations as well.

I hope this will save your fingernails and keep you from damaging your coil.

Let me know if it helps.

Guess this ex-drummer is gonna start carrying around a couple of guitar picks from now on.

Thanks for the short, yet sweet video.

You can remove them with banjo thumb picks; they won't jam. :please:

Nice Tip!!!!!

SUPERDEEDUPER!! Very Nice. Just gave up on that job until today. Thanks a million Idhrelics!! Should help thousands.

I usually sand off the edge of the cover except for the very top and bottom, probably over 50% of the rim that holds the cover on. They can still be tough to get off when it has dirt in them, seems the dirt acts a little like glue, so I will be getting some picks. Thanks for the tip and HH.

I posted this video on YouTube per request.
