How to Crop an Image

I use the crop all the time.
I have scanned a bunch of old photos and am in the process of retouching them. It is amazing how much you can learn, just by playing with Photoshop. I bought a tutorial on Retouching old Photos and it is a ball seeing them come back for near death.
I have one that I am using to practice on. It is a panorama of my father, in a lineup at a CCC camp in 1933. It is all cracked and a mess. I scanned it at 600 so I would get great detail and I can really zoom in on it to do my work. The file is 388Meg <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock"> but works great.
At first I could not even get the thing opened, it was rolled up for many years. I put it in a high humidity terrarium for a few days and managed to get it open.
It was pretty bad shape. Lots of cracks and such but I figured it would be a great subject to work on.
I am in the process right now but have a lot to learn. This is giving me a lot of chances to use layers, copy paste, croping etc.

Great stuff. I had purchased Photoshop 7 but I wasn't up to confronting it. Your articles have gotten me to play with it, use it and abuse it.
How about an article on changing pictures to post them on the net.
Neat stuff,
Thanks, Frank EastBay

crop and adjust the picture the way you want it and then click on -Image-Image Size
for the web, what I do is under Pixel Dimentions, choose pixels. Then on your longest side select 640. This is a good size for the web. If the link is there it will automaticly set the other dimention, something less than 640. Click OK...
Now go to File-Save for the Web.
A box will come up and on the right side there is a box named preset. Choose low quality JPG. You can not see the difference between low quality and high quality on the web but it sure makes a difference in file size!
On the left there will be your original picture and its file size and also the one that is reduced for the web.
Click on the smaller one and then save. Save it to a folder that you can find it in and you are done.
It is very easy once you have done it a couple times.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

... You're going to make a lot of use of th "Rubber Stamp" tool. I restored a photo that I took while in the navy.
Good Luck!

We got am IMac a few months ago, and I would like to get a decent photo editor. And I dont really want to pay $600 for Photoshop, do you have any suggestions for a cheap or better yet free one? I have the Arcsoft program they offered at .MAC and havnt really used it much....

It has iPhoto...but it is crappy for editing. But like I said, I did download Photo Studio for free...and once I play with it more I will probably be a lot more comfortable with it, but it seems too complicated to me. I know that in Windows there is a free/cheap editor that is similar to Photoshop out there, I cant remember the name, so I'm just wondering whats out there for Mac users.

Hi MikeQ:
Sorry for the late response, but we just arrived back in California after a long flight from Thailand.
Photoshop LE for the Mac is only $99. from Adobe. The link below will get you the Adobe Website URL. The second URL is for PC users, so don't bother with it.
I got my copy of PS LE with my Canon Scanner.
Hope this helps.
