HOW TO BLANK SURFACE TARGETS STILL DETECT DEEP ONES

Ok, one more and I am out to an old park. Years ago there was an attempt to put surface blanking on detectors. The idea was we could kill trash from the surface down to 4 inches in steps. It did not work out very good and drifted into never land. However, we can accomplish surface blanking in heavy trash with EX2 as follows.

At site we are going to hunt decrease the sensitivity in Manual down to about 3 or 4. The level depends on how deep you want the surface blanking so you will need to try different low sensitivity setting depending an the coil you are using. With the Sensitivity at around 4 go to Learn and clear the screen. Select reject with an active X and sweep the coil over a sampling of the area where there is heavy trash. Learn all targets for rejection. I like to go to Edit and clear up any rejection in the silver area for shallow silver but this is not necessary. Go to detection and increase the Sensitivity up as high as it will go with stable operation. Guess what? We now blank targets from the surface down several inches but will detect deep targets just fine. This really works nicely in heavy trash to peep through the trash and go after deeper coins. Most trash but iron is in the surface to 4 or 5 inch range we we kill all that.

I think a user will see that my posts are to help new users make it a little easier. For the old pro I use the above with the stock coil to hunt for the ultra deep coins when I don

BRILLIANT!....I am very surprised I never thought of that first!...LOL...The problem for me is my area has tons of old stuff very shallow.... This is too crazy not to try!...I will try at an old celler whole with tons of iron masking at shallow depths...oh wait maybe just using iron mask will help....because in some places here there is no modern trash...darn...now I am confussed...but I got to find a place where it would work...It is a cool Idea...Thanks Cody!...again and again and again...

I have been doing good with this in conjunction with what I learn and have gained from guys like yourself. I got the EX2 where I can work through trash and go after those deep targets without knocking my brains out from all those hits. I saw this back when messing around with the Learn function and kicking it around with CaptKirk. I realized I could use the negative features of Learn and discrimination to an advantage.

Hi Cody,

I love the idea, but in practice the testing I've done seems to indicate that you are as likely to blank good targets as bad ones that way. I've done a good bit of testing with iron junk mixed with good targets and found that discriminating out the junk also discriminates the goodies that are very near the junk. The only surefire solution I've found is to dig the trash. I think the idea is a great one I love the stuff you come up with, I'm just wondering if it really works.

I like what I hear and I had a Royal Sabre that had surface blanking and it worked well, but if I just make a screen in the edit mode with only the top right open and a small opening for the nickels and dig only targets that come in at mid scale or more deeper, wouldn't that be the same? Or are you trying to discriminate shallow clad also, I will try it out tomorrow.

blanked out targets wiath a higher sensitivity. Which means you would be blanking out all targets. Good and bad. I don't see how blanking out shallow targets will get you deep ones. Blanking is blanking period!

NO, you can blank surface targets because of the null discrimination and difference in depth for tones and all metal. It works and you can test this for yourself. I an not going to post something like that unless I have used it to know it works. You can do this with any discriminator. This is nothing new to the guys that have been using these discriminator for years. It works to different levels depending on the brand. The Big Bud was the first detector that I saw that has this as a feature that had been enhanced so we could blank from 1 to 4 inches. It is not perfect but we don't get discrimination the full depth and if the detector is set to enhanced the blanking it works very nice. It is not an all or nothing deal with most of these functions so keep an open mind.
