how they mined backin the day,,,,

in my area I see piles of river rocks that the miners made,,,, there are hydrolic mines, I just need to see HOW the piles of rocks got there and HOW they were mining the au out. I'm not talking about the large bucket dredge piles but smaller ones,,,, I think I could hunt it better if I knew the process,,,, andy info you can give me or point me to would be nice,,,, Thanks,,
 
ok they moved the big rocks ,,,, to get to the finer material and run that thru a sluce? so where are the piles of finer material they ran? that's where I think I wanna look,,,, what do you say?
 
If your in the Sierra Nevada area , all that material washed down to the Sacramento or American rivers and into the inland bays, thats a lot of area of potential gold finds.
