I found this at an old home sight I have found coins from the 1890 there but how old is this?

I believe it is a WW2 era insignia from A U.S. Army officers Dress uniform Hat .The link above has a picture of General George Pershing wearing a WWI version of that insignia (or maybe even a little older) on his hat . Yours appears to be a newer design .I hope this can steer you in the right direction for obtaining more accurate information on your nice find .

i think you are right WW2 when it came out of the ground it was very dirty and looked like it was in the ground for a long long time. Thanks
 
I have found 2 USN ones similar in design and they are marked 1/20 silver. Your's looks to have some silver in it, too. Nice find. HH jim tn
