How newbie friendly is the Find's forum?

tpcollins

New member
Decided to try metal detecting as a hobby and brought home a Bounty Hunter Titanium Camo that was on sale for half off at Cabels. After playing with it for a half hour, I boxed it back up and returned it a few days later. I registered on another forum asking for beginning detectors and got the usual everything from soup to nuts. After doing a ton of research and reading numerous reviews, and top picks, the Tesoro Sliver uMAX seemed like the simplest choice without all of the confusing bells and whistles for a newbie. I posted that I had ordered the Silver uMAX, and since it wasn't from one of their recommended forum sponsors, it seems I've been castigated with no responses to several followup questions.

Just wondering if all metal detecting forums are the same or is the Find one of the better ones? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum tpcollins. Don't know about other forums but the people here on the tesoro forum are very friendly and helpful. Good luck with your new detector.

Welcom and i would like to know your questions - I have and use a silver umax great detector , Can hit dimes to 6" deep and buttons to 8" deep Good coils available for it to , but more than that you need a good spot . one would think from all my finds all my detectors are no good . but you need a good spot to hunt

Lots of Tesoro experience on this forum and willing to share.

Welcome to yne forum.Everyone on this forum is nice and out of all the different machines on here The tesoro forum is the best hands down.IMHO.Hurry Get Out And Hunt and let us know what you find.HH:jump:

This is probably the number Tesoro forum on the internet. Lots of members with lot of experience, willing to help and to share tips.
Sometimes things get rowdy and interesting............for the most part everyone here is a friendly Tesoro fan who own one or more of them... are here to have fun.
Welcome, Stop back often.

Wow, I think I found the right forum. My Tesoro should be her this week. Can't wait to set up a "test garden" and see how it works. I'm sure I'll have a question or two. Thanks again for the support.

yes, welcome. dont be discouraged with the depth in your test garden. will be a bit deeper in the field where stuff has been in ground longer. good luck anyhow.

We are also the best looking people on this or any forum.
My story...sticking to it.
Prove me wrong.

Do not be scared to ask any questions here. Many of us have the same detector you ordered. Most of my detectors are Tesoro. They are easy to use and learn. Light weight. The battery will last for many hours. Take your time and it will talk to you. Have fun and show us some pictures of anything. We even like to see trash. Tabman always shows his pile of trash. Get out and hunt... KEN

At this minute I don't have a Tesoro but over the years I have had a bunch of them. Detecting is sort of a dieing art. Very few people these days want to spend hundreds of dollars to find Pennies. Join the rest of us nuts that do just that.

Look at this! Great support here on Findmall!:clapping:

The Tesoro Forum here is one of the most active, knowledgeable, and quick on responses to all questions... like on any forum, sometimes it may take a while for a person to get a response to a specific technical question, not on the Tesoro Forum here though....The Teeboys that frequent this Forum are very helpful and fun and get a kick out of helping others...it adds fire to them, so hang out and participate as much and often as you want!

Welcome and Good Luck!:detecting:

Welcome aboard tpcollins! You picked a great detector and like others have said the Tesoro Forum is fantastic! You will get swamped with advice and help.

Here are a couple of links to get you started: MASH Here and Here

Great links tabman. There's a Jr High School behind my house and the old high school football field that the middle and Jr football teams use a well as the local soccer programs. The visitor side bleachers has grass all along the sides and entrance so that might be the first place I practice once I do the initial test checks.

Welcome aboard. Do yourself a favor and skip the test garden for now. Freshly buried coins in disturbed soil give poor depth test results. I did a test garden when I first got my Silver uMax and was ready to toss it in the garbage. Then I went on the forums and whined and everybody filled me in and said just go hunting. You can waste hours reading on the ground matrix and how once disturbed it takes years to re-establish, but why?

For the money, in my opinion, the Silver uMax is the best buy out there for performance for not a lot of cash. I will also say that the F2 is a sleeper for the money. Like you I wanted a simple effective detector without out all the screens and menus, so I bought a Silver. I work on high tech electronics all day and when I go detecting I like simple and effective, and that is exactly what the Silver uMax is.

So the big question is how to start using this wonderful detector. There are two approaches and I have tried them both. The first approach is turn the disc. down real low and dig all good sounding targets. This way you will eventually learn differences in audio from trash to treasure. By doing this you are gonna dig a lot. This is how I started. At first I wondered if there was anything in the ground but pulltabs, bottle caps and the occasional penny. In my opinion method two is the way to start. Method two is turn the disc. up to just shy of penny and start hunting. This way you will experience success much sooner because essentially you are cherry picking. You will get all coins but nickels, and by the way most gold rings are in that nickel range. No sweat though, learn how to use the detector first and then you can chase gold later. Using method two I feel it is easier to learn the difference in audio subtleties between trash and coins.

When you get a target size it up. If it is coin size you will get audio only in a small sweet spot in the coil, about a coins size sweet spot at that. Check it from two directions. If it sounds sweet from two directions, start digging. If it is sweet from one direction and has broken audio/scratchy from the other direction (90 degrees from the first direction) it is probably trash that is not a round object. Dig it anyways to see. You need to learn the audio traits of your detector for different targets. This will be the key to your success and it will take some time. If the target sizes up bigger than a coin it is probably larger trash. Again dig it up just to see. This is how you go about really getting to learn your detector. No matter what detector you get you will need to go through this process to learn it.

Learn how to cut a neat recovery plug in the grass. Place any removed dirt from your plug hole on a drop cloth. Keep your holes small and neat. Leave no sign that you were there. A pin pointer is something you should get as soon as possible to keep your digging efforts neat and to a minimum. Digging clean holes is the most important thing you need to know.

Throw some coins on the ground and practice pin pointing and sizing targets up.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy your new detector. If you have any questions ask away and we will gladly help you.

Almost forgot- if you find anything worth more than $20 we require a small finders fee for all the advice we give you!

Also pay attention to what Tabman does and says, he is essential the Tesoro King. Learn hunting methods and advice from him, his success is not luck, but instead knowledge and experience.

Now stop that! The main thing that I do is get people all pumped up with my pictures of my finds. I've gained most of my knowledge from reading posts from the longtime Tesoro users who post on this forum. They may not detect as much now, but they're loaded with great information and advice. Here's one good tip that I got from Rusty Henry when I was talking with him on the phone about which coil I needed for my Vaquero. He sold me a 5.75 concentric search coil. He said it would pay for itself, because of how well it works in trashy areas. If you know Rusty, he's going to talk with you awhile and give out some great tips. One of those tips was to detect around old outdoor water faucets and drinking fountains, because after people rinse off their hands they always give them a good slinging to get the water off. In doing so, they lose rings because of their wet slippery fingers and centrifugal force. I've found a bunch of rings with that advice. :)

And get people pumped with your pictures you do! I have turned the disc down several times to go on a ring and nickel hunt after viewing your pictures, thinking man Tabman would be proud of me now! My pile of finds looked identical to the ones you post, minus the rings!

You are right about talking to Rusty. He is a wealth of knowledge, but more importantly, just a great guy to shoot the breeze with about life in general.
