How much extra depth with 10 inch coil for BH IV

Hi Folks,

I recently bought a Bounty Hunter IV for my wife. I was very impressed with it from right out of the box. One thing I did notice is that the depth is a bit lacking though. I was air testing at around 5 inches reliably....6 inches and it started to break up a bit.. I was thinking of getting the 10 inch coil to get a little more depth out of the machine. How much extra depth can you get with the 10 inch coil ? 2-3 inches ?

Also, I thought that there were different tones in Full Discrimination mode as well...similar to the ones used in the Tone Discrimination mode. But I haven't been able to get it to sound off using those different tones in Full Disc mode...only the high tone. Are the different tones only available in Tone Discrimination mode ?

Thanks :)

5-6 inches isnt bad really, its about the norm. Depending on soil conditions you can add an inch or two.

Thanks for the reply EZRider :) That's cool, a few extra inches would be helpful. Ya 5-6 is about the norm I guess. Just used to my Tesoro I guess... can get about 8 reliable inches with the 8 inch stock coil and air tests at 11 or so. But the BH IV is a lot of machine for the money! We are quite happy with it. We went out today and she found an 187? indian head penny. Was in pretty nice condition too :) Thanks again for the reply.

I've seen reports that say you will get an extra 2" with the 10" coil. I just got one and will test it out and post the results.

In the for what it's worth department, I hunt with a Discovery3300 using the standard coil and the 10" one. I feel like the 10" coil is better suited for very clean areas and relic hunting, where you dig most targets. For the extra depth (maybe 1 or 2 inches) you loose some sensitivity and get more interference from adjacent targets and trash. I went back to the standard 8" coil for coins and jewelry and have been very satisfied with the results. Hope this helps.

I think the standard 8" coil is the best bet. Ive owned the new 10" coil and the sensitivity is less and I don't see much if ANY at all better depth. It almost seemed less than with the standard 8" that came with my 3300..I also have the 4" coil...and it is a good one for very small items ..with excellent sensitivity

OK, I just did an airtest comparing the 8" standard coil to the 10" magnum coil. I tested the coils on a Fisher F2. Quarter 8" coil 8", 10" coil 10.5", Nickel 8" coil 6.5" 10" coil 8", Wheat cent 8" coil 7", 10" coil 9". Of course this is just an airtest but the 10" coil does show a significant increase in depth. The test was done with the detector at maximum sensitivity.

I still have not gotten the 10" coil...I have heard you lose sensitivity with it, and I need all the SENS I can get in this dirty dirt I have up here...

Here's my two cents...

I just put my new 10" coil on my Landstar. Airtest shows only a one inch improvement in coin detection across the board with a quarter, penny, & dime. I suppose that extra inch can make all the difference in the world with the right target, but I was expecting a little more.
