How much do you miss by not using headphones?

While my ATPro is away for upgrade, I thought I ask a couple questions. The first being the use of headphones, How much do you miss by not using headphones. I

Headphones serve several purposes...

We used them back in the old days where every detector was effectively like an AT Pro in all metal Pro mode. There was a very steady and faint threshold tone that we listened to while detecting and very deep coins or objects would cause a very, very faint increase in tone which would not be noticeable without headphones. The headphones served to be able to hear those faint changes in tone, but also served to block out external noise.

Using headphones also increased battery life as the power draw from headphones was less than that used to power the detector's internal speaker. Today's internal speakers are much more energy efficient.

While headphones do insulate you from noise and diminish our ability to detect people approaching us, you can actually compromise by using a very light pair of headphones that rest on the ear as opposed to covering them. You'll hear the tones from the detector and be able to sense and hear things/people around you. Besides, lighter headphones retain less heat and having them sit on your ear as opposed to around your ear will keep you cooler.

As for the quality of the tones, expensive phones may make the tones sound better, but I don't believe you'll miss anything by having a cheap pair of headphones.

As for wireless, there are a couple options out there. but they are very pricey. I'm betting there will be bluetooth transmitters on detectors soon, so you could even use some kind of MP3 player or phone with bluetooth and headphones as a receiver, or just use dedicated bluetooth headphones. I'm there when THAT happens. I can't wait to cut the cord!

Muddy shoes kind of answered your question pretty clearly.

My input would be, this is a hobby, if you don't like headphones then don't wear them.
If you start to feel the outside noise is getting to loud then put em on.

Gray Ghost Phones are far superior to the Garrett phones supplied with the Pro.
If you choose to use Gray Ghost you need an adapter. I think everyone sells them now.

I have Gray Ghost on my MXT and they are nice. Are they $100.00 nicer than the Garretts,
I don't think so, but to each his own.

Muddyshoes hit it on the head. Wireless Phones are just around the corner for everyone.
In a years time every manufacturer will offer wireless phones as an option. They will be pricey
at first, but come down rapidly as times passes. Remember, nothing is forever.

happy hunting. The AT Pro is a great machine. I have 5 high dollar machines and the Pro is my goto
toy of choice at this time. Like I said, "Nothing lasts for ever. Lookin at a VX3 as we speak. You cannot
beat Whites for customer support and producing a bullet proof detector.

One more thing, detector beeping and tones can be heard over long distances and because of their sound frequency, they can cut through regular ambient noises of nature or even city noises while hunting in and near parks. Many people can find those distracting and you may actually attract more attention and curious onlookers by NOT using headphones. For me, I like to blend in as much as possible, and even prefer to wear earthtone clothing when I hunt. The less I stand out the better.

Earphones/ear buds are a must for getting the max performance from your machine. They also are nice for avoiding unwanted attention from others and help to keep a low profile. They keep the machine from becoming a source of noise pollution in quiet areas.
Bluetooth causes to much signal delay but Kleer technology works great and can be had for $50.00 and up if you shop around.Search Auvio Kleer and 2.4 GHZ WIRELESS for wireless options that work well. The ear buds using this technology are great and the best of both world when it is hot out.

I cannot answer the question because I never hunt without headphones.

I use "rattlers". These are headphones with only one ear cup. The other ear is exposed to hear your surroundings. they work well for me.

In a quiet atmosphere, the GTI, GTP & ACE series perform not too bad, in that they do not have modulated audio. All weak signals are strengthened so you can hear them. The AT Pro has the modulated audio, so weak signals remain weak signals so the operator can guess their depth with better accuracy.

I had the same concern and here is what I done..... I installed a standard 1/4" jack out of the rear of the detector, just as most people have with the AT Pro and normally I prefer my higher end headphones most of the time but when its super hot and if I'm not in a real loud area, I have a better solution. I use the athletic ear-bud type that has the clip to hold the wire to my shirt...but then I bought a cheap 1/4" jack extension cord and put the smaller plug on the end for the small earbud type. The coiled jack cord was 8 bucks at radio shack and I cut it down to about 5 foot. This is all taped up tight and is stuck under by finds belt with just the plug sticking up above my belt. This way when digging and moving around the detector isnt pulling at the ear-buds. When I detect in the woods I run the ear-bud cord under my shirt and still plug into the jack thats sticking up under my belt and no worry with tree limbs grabing them off my head. Hopefully I explained it clearly.... i.e. a coiled cord is running from my detector to my finds belt and the ear-bud is plugged in at my belt???? This took 30 mins with a solder gun and less than $10 bucks...I already had the walkman ear-buds... But try to get the ones that are athletic type...they have the molded rubber that wraps around your ear like the old style hearing aids....about $25 bucks for them. This works great for me.
