How much discrimination, if any?

I might have the opportunity to search a old home site (c1850) that was lived in until about 5 years ago and now gone. If looking for relics and coins I would set the ATP in Zero mode, but was wondering...... do you guys set the the iron discrimination at all or leave at zero? It was a wood frame house so I was wondering about nails.

Thanks
Denis

Here's my setting I use all the time. Zero Disc., iron tone 35, iron Audio on, Sens at max(if stable). swing really really slow and listen to the good sounds. JMO

If you have the 5 x 8, use it for sure. I'm just gonna bet you are right about the nails. Probably going to be infested with them. The 5 x 8 will do a better job at separation. I usually run in Pro mode, Zero, Iron disc at 35, Iron Audio off, Sens. at 4-5 bars. I am not a believer in full Sens. except when I get a weak signal. Sensitivity will amplify everything the good and the bad. It can make bad targets sound good and cause your machine to report targets that aren't even there. I keep Iron Audio off most times as the constant noise in trashy nail ridden sites will drive you nuts. I turn it on to help identify iffy signals sometimes, like bottlecaps.

Big Cat Daddy, you may have just given me a great idea. I was out the other day at one of these 1850's home sight and found five flat buttons. I run in pro mode, zero, iron disc at 35 to 40 and iron audio on. Every button i found were copper and every one of them would sound of as mixed signals. They would sound like they were mixed with iron. Dig them up and recheck the hole and nothing. So why the low tones, theres no iron? It may be that Im running with max sensitivity or less one bar, if theres to much noise. It may be that with that much sensitivity its picking up on the oxidation on the buttons and giving me the mixed signals. Im going to try a lower setting and see if it helps drop the low tones. thanks for the thought.

Im with Big Cat Daddy on sensitivity. I hit some really trashy areas, with layers of trash. and sometimes run the sensitivity real low, in the worst areas as low as 2 or 3 bars and it amazes me what I can pull out of them

I am to new to the AT pro to take sides, but in general to much sensitivity can be a bad thing. The best analogy I ever heard was from another forum member that I can not recall the name. But he said to much sensitivity is like driving your car in the fog with the high beam lights on.
