How much difference & what difference is there when ..

you switch coils on Umax Detectors?? Does it deplete the detectors capabilities? Or put Strain on the unit itself?
this question is sort of a technical one.

Hi Rusty,

If you put say a 4" coil on the unit you will loose depth, but gain better target separation than with the larger stock coil. If you put a larger coil on, like a 12"x10" instead of the stock coil you will gain depth, but loose target separation. There are other types of coils that give you different benefits, but there is always some type of trade off. I am not sure there is any stain put on the detector itself, MAYBE on the battery life but even really doubt that. Hopes this helps.

HH,

the detector has to be tuned or "tweeked" to accomodate that particular coil to achieve the coils optimal performance.
You ever hear that?

Yes, that's the loop balance. It will not hurt you that much, I change my coils a good bit without issue. I guess if you were going to keep the new coil as your main coil, it might be worth sending it in to Tesoro for recalibration. I have also heard that if your unit has a manual ground balance, you can adjust enough for it. I am not sure about that though, and someone more in the know may be able to fully answer you on that.

but it is not noticably by most detectorists... Companys are not going to sell coils that will effect the performance that much... There are allowable variences of .1-.2 % on most electrical componentry.... Sometimes there are reasons for misalignment of the transmit/recieve windings of the coil that can affect the coils performance...then sending it in for tuning would be in order... Nautilus is the only company that I know of that has the coil tune feature built into a machine...Best to you, RichardnTn

That's exactly the answer I was looking for!
I knew that it had to have some sort of variation even if it is minute.
Thanks. It was my pleasure to recieve such a knowledgable answer!
