How much difference is there between the Elite and The GT

Hi All,

I would like to ask for some help and advice please.

I am toying with the idea of purchasing a Sovereign but I'm undecided whether to go for an Elite or go the "whole hog" and go for a GT. From what I understand by reading up on the specifications there seems to be not a lot of difference between the two machines, Am I correct in that assumption??? I am relitively new to Coin Hunting, I did have a Garrett GTI 2500 for a while until recently, but didn't like it for a number of reasons and sold it, but I didn't get a lot of experience with it, but I have a fair amount of experience in Gold Detecting and have a GPX 4000 but I want to do a bit of coin hunting for a couple of reasons, one is that I want to be able to use a lighter machine because I have a shoulder that is giving me some trouble with the heavier machines and if I hip mount the Sovereign that will certainly help, another is that our fuel prices here in Oz. are so high they seem to take the enjoyment out of travelling particularly when my nearest gold detecting areas area couple of hours drive away and I want to be able to detect closer to home, and still get the enjoyment from detecting.

Another question I want to ask for comment on is, With a Sovereign whether it be Elite or GT or even one of the earlier models, are they too complex for what may be deemed as a beginners machine to start coin hunting with or should I be looking at something a bit less complex like a Garrett Ace 250 to start with??? Also while on the line and about the Sovereign, how advantageous is using the Digital Target Meter particularly for someone like me who has industrial deafness and needs to wear hearing aids from time to time??? I am open to suggestions and helpful advice please.

I look forward to your help,

Regards, limpy.

The GT is the best Sovereign to date IMHO. It has the ability to turn the Iron Mask on or off, Noise Cancel, all the features of the original Sov and the Elite combined into making the GT. But the GT has ground tracking similar to your gold detector. GT stands for Gold and Treasure, so you can relic, coin, jewelry, beach (even saltwater beaches) and gold prospect with it. If you have swing weight problems, we have custom shafts, meter mounts and chest mount kits that reduce the swing weight by 90%. All of our GT's come with free mods. Look in our Specialty Items page for information on how I set up Sovereigns for optimum use. They are outstanding detectors with a very easy learning curve.
Good hunting,

Hi Limpy,
I felt a bit daunted when I bought my GT and I actually postponed using it on hunts for a while but there really was no need. There is a learning curve to it but I started finding with mine the first time I used it. I had to read the manual several times and bench test it before I started to better understand how to use it properly but I did have some success straight away by using the factory settings from the manual. I can't comment on earlier models as I haven't tried them. I do have a meter but haven't got round to using it yet so I am sure the more experienced sovereign users will give you the rundown on that. I use a chest mount harness on mine and it makes it a breeze to detect all day.

UK and David, Thanks for your help and advice. As I said I am toying with the idea of buying a sovereign but I have also had someone on my ear and suggesting that I would be better as a virtual beginner with an Ace 250, so with your help and advice as well as other ideas, I will have to make up my mind one way or another.

Many thanks again, Regards, Barry.

Hey Limpy. I am not sure if you know about this site but it has lots of reviews on many detectors. I find it very useful when thinking of getting a new detector. Check it out. www.metaldetectorreviews.net

My opinion would be getting a older used Sovereign XS or XS2 with a 180 meter as they are selling cheap and you can resell if you don't like it and get most if not all you money back again, but if you like it and get to know it then I would go for the best and that is the GT which is a better detector, but for a newbie to the Sovereign may be too much to get to learn it for some. I know once you learned it that GTI 2500 you have will not even come close to what a Sovereign will do for deep and coins and those close to trash as I had a GTI 2500 for a while.

Probably not a bad idea to be honest. Most people pick up a detector with a preconceived notion that it's BEEP and then TREASURE. That simple, only it's not.
You could start with an ACE or as someone said a cheap used 1st generation Sovereign. That way the loss is small if you decide not to pursue this as a hobby but on the other hand both are good detectors to start with period.
