How much difference is the 8 mono vs 10x14 mono?

Looking on depth between them on small gold and classring size gold. I have a very small 18k white gold ring and seen it does not disc. out till 3.5 . I was in the water today and seen I could run the unit at 2.25 disc. without a mass of feedback from waves going over the coil. So I run with it but seen that the small white gold did not get disc. out at 3.5 give me sigh of relief that running at 2.75 disc. will be OK. At 2.75 disc. the unit hardly seen the salt wave. Now I have to decide between the 2 coils. Thank you! Joe

Good to hear that you are not afraid to try a bit of disc on the Infinium.
I have been trying to covince people to do that for years because it works in smoothing out the salt and wave action over the coil.
Even with the disc up as high as 5 or 6 you will still get good depth on the larger gold rings and sil will hardly be affected.

In the gold fields it is best not to use the disc at all unless you are working in salty ground. Even a setting of 2 or 3 will cut out some small gold nuggs.

Both 8 inch and 10 x 14 mono's are very sensitive and get almost identical depth on coins and rings. the big mono has the advantage of extra coverage

I've done some tests, and turning up the disc makes you lose depth across the board. Test it out, get a gold ring, turn disc to 0 and find the max depth in an air test, then turn disc up to 2, and test max depth, then disc to 4, etc. You lose depth drastically when you turn up the disc. On a .5gram ring I have it went from 6 inches at 0 disc, to 1 inch at 3 disc...

Excellent observation and test ............you are spot on.
Small low conductivity items like the gold we seek, will rapidly distance itself from detection as soon as the disc. is increased above "0".

My Infinium LS when used on the beach is always at "0" Disc. unless I'm looking for a specific high conductivity target with limited time.

Air test are not fullproof. Also I use 0 to 1 in the saltwet sand. In the water isn't better to have a more stable machine. If you hear the hi/low from salt you will most likely miss deeper or small signals. I will have to learn the machine agian. Thank you,Joe

Correct, air tests can be dicey but it serve as a quick and easy test as long as all targets are tested under same condition.
Disc. 1 is fine if you just want to reduce the chirping.

On a beach even in the wet I would rather run a "0" GB and "0" Disc. and reduce the threshold setting to a point just below audio threshold, when using the Garrett Black land phones.

If the Blue phones are used then again the threshold can be set to just below audio threshold but the setting will be lower than with the black phones cause they (blue phones) are more sensitive and louder.

Oops, I forgot.
When using the Infinium LS on an open beach, use the same coil speed ....... as is used ..... when the coil is in the water.
A fast coil speed to the Infinium is like watching an action movie on TV while blinking your eyelids .....................no, it's not a joke.

You learn to ignore the drawn out signal as a wave passes over. I wouldn't turn up the disc to get rid of it, if it's going to screw with your detectors performance.

Yes you will lose depth on small gold rings etc and 0.5 gm ring as mentioned earlier in the thread is a very light weight ring and it will be wiped out with the disc over 3. if the ring is 18 k or better. 9 , 10 and 14 k may sound off better depending on what the alloy metal is.
The disc on the infinium is not like normal discrimination on a vlf machine and different conductivity metals will be affected differently.
For eg: our Aussie 1 and 2 dollar coins will give a fairly wishy washy signal at zero disc, sort of a combined a hi/lo and a lo/hi and depth is not great, it is still good but just not great. But when you set the disc to around the 3 mark the tone becomes a solid Hi/LO and depth is significantly better than at the zero disc position.
I have a box full of gold and sil rings (200 +) that I have found with the infinium while using a disc setting of between 2 and 3. and the majority of these were recovered from between 6 and 15 inches in wet salty sand conditions. When I want to find everything I will use zero disc but will not hesitate to wind in a bit of disc to quieten the salt if the noise becomes annoying.

So yes you will loose depth as you crank the disc up and you will miss some very small gold targets, but the depth loss is not size dependant alone but includes the metal composition and conductivity.

Ok Folks ~ never done saltwater on Infinium . I have used freq. adjust on soil & had it smooth out a bit (other time was under power lines with a little gold present) Does F-Adjust work on Salt at All ? Thanks - Ken

The frequency adjust is to help reduce electrical interference and works wherever you are using the detector. salt, iron , mud on the moon etc.
The frequency adjust does not alter the detectors sensitivity because the total frequency adjust range is only in the order of just a few pulses per sec.

Joe,

I had an 8 inch mono for my Infinium as well as the stock DD. I sold em both...I only use the 10x14 mono for all my salt water beach hunting excursions. It may just be me, but the 10x14 has found me so much good stuff and runs super smooth that I don't have a need for any other coil.

I did find the 8 inch to be easier to use in the water, but since I wet sand and suds hunt most of the time, I did not need that advantage.

I'll sometimes use both coils as close to the ground as possible even if it mean keeping a slight contact, coil speed it about as slow as water hunting.
On a wet beach with 1/4" of water the skid plates works well as it's possible to skim smoothly on top, if wet but no water take off skid plate or it'll get stuck.
When water hunting, skid plates is not used.

At times or at some locations an 8" coil will give more depth than the 14x10"mono simply because the smaller coil can be used closer to or on the ground.
To me the ground condition dictates what coil I'll use.
My Disc. is always on "0" and my threshold volume is always just perceptible.

Hi ivanll , I was thinkin' bout cutting away the plastic (maybe have to melt it Hot for chipping) to the contour of coil - Whatcha Think ?

Sorry, I've lost your thinking..............I'm using skid plates (coil protector) for the purpose of having the coil in contact with the ground...........it just snaps on or off.

Have yez bin on the turps a bit mate??:surprised:
Chip away the plastic surounding the coil and I can asure you that you will stuff it completely:angry:

Hello guys, I just purchased an infinium and it came with the 10x14 and the 4x8 coil can someone help out with the one to use. I only hunt Gold nuggets here in northern Arizona and the ground is rough on vlf machines this is my first time with a PI detector any help would be appreciated.

What are the differences in performance ?

Thanks

Start with the 8" Mono and get use to the Infinium LS.........really use to it.
On open flat ground I would likely choose the 14x10" Mono.
