How many use coil covers

New member
I just put up the coil cover removal post and it got me to wondering how many of you use coil covers. So that is my question, just how many of you do use coil covers?

I feel you should only use them if your hunting over rocks, sand, or other harsh surfaces...in the grass, I do not feel they are needed. The cleaning issue is the problem with me...if I put a cover on the coil, I want it to be waterproof, and dust proof...I would end up using silicone to adhere the coil cover to keep dirt out.

I use a light coat of spray-on Truck bed coating...it seems to work for me....HappyHunting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The covers are there to protect your investment (coil). I have worn out one coil on the beaches and nearly wrecked another. I'd sooner replace covers than coils! Contrary to some peoples belief, you will not lose any depth by using them. Also bumping them into posts, rocks etc will bust your coils eventually. I detect for a living, and because of that fact, I feel accountable to give the best info that is available to my knowledge. At the beach the sand acts like sand paper each time you swing, this action over time will wear away your coil without doubt. Ask any professional operator and they'll tell you the same thing. I've used silicone to stop sand getting into my coil covers too, the problem is the sand still gets in!! I don't know how, it just does. I wrecked a 10" coil because of this.

I detect in the grass and woods. My last BH hated the beach and I expect the TR to hate it too. I can see some scratches on my coil, but its not much and none are deep. For my needs I can skip the coil cover. Lets say that as a novice detectorist I manage to destroy a coil once every 3 years [just speculation]. In that time I will have probably dumped my current detector and gotten the new and 'improved' version. Why buy a cover is what I ask myself.
